I have been following cns for a couple of months.  I have gained 14lbs but I was expecting that as I was eating very low calorie prior. I have tracked my macros, keep well under 30g carbs, possibly a little over 1b protein body weight (I love meat!) and 0.5g fat.  I weigh 126lbs, am female, 5ft 3″, 44 years old. I workout 6 days a week early am fasted high intensity strength training. Started cns as I was fed up with counting calories & was starting binge eating as I was hungry most of the time. I just want to get lean, weight doesn't really bother me. Since starting cns, I have gained inches around my hips and thighs & have had awful fluid retention problems despite drinking in excess of 4 litres water a day. I am now having major hypoglycaemic episodes which are making my life hell.  Is it possible that cns is not the best route for me? All the science makes so much sense I am loathed to give up but I feel so awful most days!I would really appreciate any suggestions or comments you may have. I read the forum as much as possible & have been touched by the support provided.Kind regards.

hi Big Tex, thanks for the link, I have tried the eggs & butter but it doesn't stop the hypoglycaemia unfortunately.  I also find that the episodes are awful if I don't eat every 2/3 hours but they are getting more severe after I have eaten too.  I am not hungry but I can feel the light headedness coming on. Not sure what to do now!! I stopped my training yesterday to see if that would help but not yet. BOO HISS!!!I appreciate your reply, thank you.

What's your schedule like, and what is your workout routine?Maybe tweaking your ratios would help, by consuming more coconut oil and butter, for example, I'm 264 lbs, and I consume 3 tablespoons of butter, 3 tablespoons of coconut oil, all the meat I consume as some fat in it. Also lower your protein intake. And one pattern that worked for me in losing weight, I used to do one carb nite a week and I was gaining weight. I blossomed to 285lbs following the protocol as strict as I can, this was 2 months ago. What I ended up finding out was if I only do carb nite after I stall, meaning, I give my body 2-3 weeks to lose weight and when I find out I stall, then I do a carb nite and I'd even carry it over for the next day. Do HIIT the next two days, and go back to ULC routine.Your workout routines shouldn't be more than an hour and it should be strictly lifting heavy weights. Now if you're already lean, you don't look flabby, you don't need CNS, and I'd suggest CBL instead.

List your carb sources and what your ending your CN with please. Thats going to be the reasoning behind your hypoglycemia. Also how long are your CN's lasting? How long after your last meal are you going to bed? And when are the hypoglycemia episodes happening? (Middle of the night, next day, etc)

carb sources are vegs mostly - asparagus, spinach, romaine lettuce, kale.  I am gluten & diary intolerant so cns have been a bit of a pain & I really don't enjoy them that much. I love fruit & veg & that's all I really crave! My last cn I started with an over-ripe banana at 4pm, I made a chicken curry with jasmine rice & a Moroccan spiced chutney & finished with a couple of hot chocolates with coconut cream in around 9.30pm & in bed half an hour later (I get up at 5am). Non-cns I finish eating around 7pm & go to bed around 10pm.The last week or two I have woken up hypoglycaemic.  Last week I battled through my workouts which are only 35 mins tops (basic weighted compound moves with hiit intervals) but the last two days I have felt so shaky & light-headed I have given it a miss. I feel light-headed, brain fogged, blurred vision most of the time but have noticed this week that the episodes are definitely worse shortly after eating (sweating, nausea, really dizzy, anxious, etc.). I have just realised that I have only recently introduced a weekly cn on Saturdays, before I was going 2 weeks or so because things just happened that way (got young children, manic life & I really enjoy meat & a few vegs with lashings of coconut oil), is that just a coincidence the hypoglycaemic episodes have got worse?I hope information is concise enough! Thank you for your time.

Ok I mean everything seems aright as far as sources. Is all you ate on your CN jasmine rice then chocolate later? You need several spikes to get the hormonal reset. Im not sure if there is a correlation between shortening your CN but their could be. Keep in mind that CN was designed for 7 days though- and it is suggested to not skip it. What I would try is changing up what your eating before bed. Looks like right now its pretty much sugar and some fat. Try adding in some protein of some sort. And then when you wake up have some MCT Oil and Coffee at least. Should help.

Thank you for your input. I definitely felt better without a weekly cn so that is an option for me.  I wish I was lean! The weight on the scales does not bother me too much but I hate the fat that has now appeared on my thighs and hips! I love eating this way but I feel so ill most of the time that I really am struggling to justify my actions. You've done a fantastic job though so well done! Thanks again.

I was wondering if I should eat more on the cns. I do struggle now with low fat & high sugar! I think I have eaten clean for so long that I really don't enjoy them. Now fat is a major love!! I will try some more tweaking as you have suggested and hope this is a blip! I do not know what to try if this situation doesn't improve though, boo hoo!Cheers for your help.

No problem, if your only eating two carb meals on your CN you need more. Just try to end it with some protein or more of a whole food. Take a look at the back of the book for sample Carb Nites. Table sugar sources such as yogurt are kept early and pretzels and cookies (still have sugar but obviously starch as well). You might even try to just do a “by the book CN” first and see if that helps.

Not sure if I'm getting the whole story here. Your HIIT should only happen a day after CNS, after that.. it's too late. You still don't have to do HIIT if you don't want to, it helps for people and there's good reason to do it.For people suggesting skipping a carb nite is not recommended, that depends on the individual. If you tried to stick to the original standard protocol of CNS, and it's not working, skipping a carb nite is fine. But suggesting that people are doing something wrong after following CNS by the book, just leads up to frustration and potential weight gain. Now, I'm curious as to why you're spending your time eating a bunch of veggies during your carb nite? You should focus on eating highly sugary foods. Ones containing high amounts of glucose or somewhere high on the glycemic index chart. Meaning no apples or pears (nothing containing fructose), you should be eating citris fruits like oranges or grapefruit, or potatoes, corn, rice, oatmeal drenched in syrup, etc.You also mentioned you lead a manic life style. If that's a case then that means your cortisol levels are also pretty high, which leads to weight gain if you don't control it. You need some time to relax. You really do need a CN. It's not an option. It's natural for your hormones to fight your body in expending fat, which is the reason why people stall and stop losing weight. Carbs fixes all those hormone levels to keep on burning fat again. So, to reiterate, for most people, going once a week is fine. But for others, like myself, 2-3 weeks is perfectly acceptable.I'm on my 3rd week of no carbs, ~0g a day, and I feel GREAT,never had any headaches. My weight is rapidly dropping, and all I do is work out 4 days a week, ~45 mins. That's it.9am,3pm,6pm - no breakfast.. cup of coffee with tablespoon of butter, and coconut oil, and heavy whipping cream. 3 tablespoons of fat... 9 in totalbetween 12-4pm, I'd be munching on pork rinds, beef jerky, or half a handful of nuts.12, 10pm - almost half a pound of meat with veggies.and I drink 2 gallons of water. being low carb, you can EASILY get dyhydrated. So I would take in a monohydrate creatine supplement in your water, and a multi vitamin.that's it.. follow this.. and you should be all set.
