Greg l wilcoxParticipantHello to all.I bought Carb Backloading about 2 months ago and have been lurking here since.I'm looking to add muscle mass without gaining fat. I'm currently at 197lbs, 5'-11 tall with a BF of about 17% or so (Calipers-one measurement). Male at age 44I have two kids,a wife and a busy job so I'm working out at 7:30pm after a long day. I'm wondering what you all think about my calorie count going into the evening. I'm getting home at about 5:30pm just in time for dinner with the family. I'm at roughly 1700 calories at that point and eat roughly 400 calories at dinner. I work out for an hour and end at roughly 8:30pm. I was having a PWO shake right away, but now after the Kiefer webinar and black list I have been waiting 30 minutes and then Carb Backload at 9:00pm. My PWO is one serving of Dymatize Pursuit Recovery Blend and 1/2 serving of Phase 8 from Muscletech. I add in leucine (5 grams) as well.I end up at about 3,400 to 3,500 calories. I use white sushi rice and a 1/4 of rasins as a staple. Sometimes I add a cookie and lately I added frosted flakes (53 grams carbs). I always have whole food protein with that (chicken or CC)Any thoughts. Kiefer has a meal plan for working out at 6:00pm and another for 9:00pm. Life does not fit into neat time frames I understand but the big difference is carbs before working out. He suggets adding them to dinner when working out at 9:00pm. I tried that once and did not like it. I go into the work out at 7:30pm at around 2,100 calories but only 30-40 grams of carbs. Does this sound like a solid plan. Any suggestions. Thanks

alextheGR8MemberI will give input based on my experience.I workout routinely at 8, sometimes even 9pm. I never have carbs pre training, and I do just fine with backloading them afterward. The main reasons he suggests the protocol the way it is for late PM, is because he has found that performance can suffer from training that late in the day. But I think more importantly with his new post workout protocol it would be very difficult to squeeze the necessary nutrients in before you'd go to sleep. For instance, not many people can train at 8, be done around 9, wait until 10 to consume their post workout shake, and then try to consume the amount of protein and carbs before bed time. I have a flexible schedule being a personal trainer, so i have been able to structure my backloads on days in which I train my clients later in the day. This just allowing me to go to sleep later.Point is, the pre-workout carbs in my recent experience are not mandatory, but do have their reason. That is why Kiefer states that this time of training is the least optimal, but I have made it work pretty well so far.

Greg l wilcoxParticipantThanks for the reply. 7:30pm is late enough for me. I would struglle with anything later. Ideally I would get home and work out, but that means lifting in the basement while my family I have not seen all day is upstairs eating without me. Not great for the family.I like the feeling of working out with no carbs. More engergy, and I feel stronger. Waiting an hour after the workout is tough. There is just not enough time in the day. As it is, at the end of my workout I'm hungry. It is 8:30pm or 8:40pm and i Have only had 2,100 or 2,200 calories. Thanks again.
