Brian TimlinParticipantA father of a young soccer player has asked me to help him with his nutrition, if there is anything I could add to his current regime (which is a pretty standard load up on carbs and lean protein all day eating). I'd like to advise carb backloading, but I'm still getting familiar with the protocol itself. Some help would be appreciated. He's an 18 year old playing professionally and wants to get to the next level. He's a hard worker, the team is in at 9am and finished at 12. They will have done hard or light training depending on the day, but either way it is a fair bit overall. Then he stays back and does skill work and some heavy resistance work in the gym (4-5 sets, 5-6 days a week), for another 3 hours or so.So on average he's doing 6 hours per day of activity ranging from light to hard at different times. If it's not a training day its a game and that is very intense for 90 minutes so you can call that similar because it is so all out.Basically six days a week of professional athlete training, pretty darn intense and starts in the morning. Is carb backloading appropriate for someone like this? You could give the typical advice and the lad would be fine, but could carb backloading give him an edge by having him at 5-6% body fat instead of 12%, which is what soccer players are usually at. And could it have him lighter at training and in games if he's carb loaded from the night before and not that day?Is it appropriate to have him eating only protein and fats until evening and then loading up on carbs?I've no experience of cbl with this kind of situation, only with my own regular type training, which is working well. I said I wasn't sure if I could add much, but that I'd check some things out for him and see if it might give him an edge. Any advice would be appreciated.

Melvin McLainParticipantI'd say the best advice would be some rest days so he can recover more. Training hard during (most any) sports season leaves players drained for actual game play.

Richard SchmittModeratorIf he is Pro, contact a coach from Kiefer. It would be the best solution.
