lillywhitesMemberHere's a question that I've seen asked in various formats, but nothing really answers the question. How long after Carb Nite before Blood Sugar Levels drop back to normal? I did read that "we" (low carb people) lack the enzymes and sufficient insulin response to breakdown carbohydrates and remove them as quickly as we do fat, therefore our Blood Sugar Level remains higher for longer. So for someone (me) who is not overweight...not looking to lose weight, no pre-diabetic/diabetic, but typically runs a CN/CBL plan, how quickly should Blood Sugar drop back down?....two days...three days?thanksMark

Richard SchmittModeratorThis honestly depends. From the type of carb consume, (with even type of protein and/or fat), to even any supplements you may take with it. Like leucine and whey.Possibly an hour or overnight. I've seen both.

lillywhitesMemberthanks…so i need to look at two possibilities:1. Look and see if where any sneaky carbs are finding their way into the diet2. Keep my Carb "Nite" cleaner (less Pizza, Donuts, Fries) 🙂Given that during any week, the only carbs are post-workout 2x per week, this leaves my Carb Nite as the culprit...this is not to say my Blood Sugar levels are high....just higher than I would want.

Jenelle BrewerParticipantlilly, you are not going to find many people here who consistently monitor their blood sugar levels.I'm not sure what sort of numbers you are looking at, but if you want to share -- I can share my experience. One thing I can tell you for sure -- there is more to it than diet. Right before my period, my fasting blood glucose rises for several days, and it has nothing to do with what I am eating, or how much. I discovered this during my last stretch of strict keto. Did some research about it, and found that this is a common occurrence for women. What I have found, if we are talking about FBG, is that mine drops down to what I would consider my "normal" (keto or ULC) range within about 2-3 days after consuming a lot of carbs. This will happen more quickly if I am more active. Hope that helps.

lillywhitesMember@Curious…thanks for the info I found the same when testing my wife's Blood Sugar Levels (LilyWhites is a nickname for my Football Team 😉 )I've only just started to play with the Glucose Meter, morning after Carb Nite it was at 133, then subsequent morning's... 113, 120. I could see the 133 still being high, however, the 120 should have dropped more. Protein after the gym...no carbs, but with 58% of protein converted to carbs in the liver, could this have elevated the morning readings. I'll know more tomorrow morning, as no gym tonight, just usual dinner....fish/meat, veggies, lots o' butter. It's really more tweaking than any real concern. i'm 5'10", 184 @ 10.5% BF, looking to drop down to 8-9%, so looking at and tracking Blood Sugar is just another tool to see there's something else i can manipulate.

Jenelle BrewerParticipantWell, sir, you do not have to worry about your period, then, do you? 😀 hahaI agree those seem a bit high. But I am only comparing to myself and my experience. I've measured while doing more of a keto approach (high fat, moderate protein, ultra low carb, NO protein powders during that time). To be fair, I have NOT measured consistently when I was doing Carb Nite or when I am consuming carbs at night on a regular basis. I will say there is definitely something to the protein, though. If your goal is ketosis, or to get the lowest fasting blood sugar possible, you really do have to up the fat and limit the protein. Protein powder can cause a spike, for sure.

Penny DannerParticipantDr Rocky and Kiefer discussed fasting blood glucose in podcast 18 around the 30 minute mark or shortly after. The question was in regard to fructose….dr Rocky said he found his fbg was back to normal faster if he kept all of his carbs coming from foods without fructose (or sugar since it is sucrose/fructose) until later in the evening. Check out that podcast. It may help.
