TheRevKeymasterI compete in strongman events and got into CBL to see if it helped my strength. It has, tremendously. I have zero interest in fat loss. I back load every evening, including non workout days. This hasn't really affected my body weight. I've gone up five pounds in three months, and I'm assuming it's muscle since my body fat hasn't changed. Anyone else doing CBL for actual strength and not to get on the cover of GQ? 😉

Tanner FoxParticipantWhen I originally started CBL I backloaded every night like you said. I noticed a really decent mass/strength gain, along with a little fat over 8 months time. Overall coming up to 250lb from 225lb I was very pleased. I think 5lbs in 3 months is a good rate of mass gain, especially with your strongman workload and your goals are strength at all costs.

TheRevGuestCool. Do you do any sort of strength athletics?

Brandon D ChristParticipantI am currently working on strength right and using CBL. I have gained a couple pounds of muscle since starting while staying lean at the same time. My lifts are progressing very well. I don't compete in anything yet because I am still trying to find my niche. I think I would enjoy Strongman, but I am too small (5'6″ 175 lbs) and there isn't weight classes in that sport. I might give powerlifting a shot, but I don't particulary care for wearing all the equipment.

I am pursing my first powerlifting meet (raw) right now with Kiefer. Before started CBL I was 220lb, squat was 405 x 1 and deadlift was 500 x 1. After backloading for 24 weeks i was 250lb with a 500lb squat and 600lb dead. Recently I wanted to keep the same weight so I don't backload every night and the last time I tested I was around 545lb squat and 645lb dead. I am confident i have gotten stronger but the bench is what is being worked on now.As far as strongman type stuff, I walk the weight out from the rack to my squatting position and that's about it :).

There actually are weight classes. NAS is the sole governing body in the States. http://www.nastrongman.com is the website. Check it out. Powerlifting is cool, I did it for a while. But it's very static. Strongman is such a dynamic sport, I think you'd really like it.

Thanks a lot for that. I had no idea there was classes in strong man. Yea one of my least favorite things about powerlifting was how slow paced it was. While I respect the guys who can squat 1,000 lbs, I want to be able to be strong while I'm moving.

CmoMemberI've got a pro strongman in my town, he is 6 foot 8, 405 lbs. he came over one night to set up a diet for me (typical female, I kept dropping calories). He is ginormous. My husband is 6 '4″, 210, and the strong man made him look like a little boy. Super super nice guy. Won the Arnold this year. There's amateur weight class, which I thought was under 235?

There is a novice class, which, depending on who's running the comp, will have a lightweight (under 231) and heavyweight (over 232) or they might just clump them together. Sooooo, Mike Jenkins gave you a diet plan?

CmoMemberNo, Adam Scherr helped me with a diet plan, that I followed for about 3 months. But I want to focus on fat loss, once again. I'm sorry, Adam won the amateur portion of the Arnold, or however you want to phrase it. http://www.ironmind.com/ironmind/opencms/Articles/2012/Mar/Adam_Scherr_Wins_Arnold_ASC_Amateur_Strongman_World_Championships.html
