Hello,I'm very excited to have found CNS and I've been on the diet for almost 10 weeks now. I have a carb nite every 7 days. I have now completely cut the carbs during the ulc part of the day for 3 weeks. I also cut out coffee, since I suspect it messes with insulin sensitivity. I also stopped using the psylium and eating cheese/dairy as well. I basically eat just a 4-egg omelet and half a pound of bacon for breakfast and have some steak for diner. I supplement with coconut oil to reach the 1:1 protein/fat ratio. I have a PWO shake with about 40-50 grams of whey isolate with some creatine. At first I was enjoying protein and fats from various sources, but now I strictly go for beef, pork, eggs, bacon. I do basic weightlifting 3 days a week squatting, benching, deadlifting, etc. I try not to overdo the training part since I'm not eating to gain muscle.I started at 305lbs and im now at 290. Actually, I lost the first 10-12 pounds during the 10 first days. I am quite obese (estimated at 44% bf). Used to be at 440lbs and got down to 300ish 3 years ago. I have not been able to go lower since.I work nightshifts alone and can enjoy a nap sometimes. I have a hard time sleeping more than 6 hours straight even on weekends. I suspect my hormones are out of whack because of this..I'd appreciate any input / encouragement, thanks everybody.

coffee decreases insulin sensitivity.  Bring it back.

Yes definitely bring the coffee back.and to be honest with you . Your statement

does not quite make sense to me. number one you want to gain muscle.Lean muscle is the primarily fat burning machine for your body. Believe me your not going to look like a competing bodybuilder from the pros by continuing to weight lift. Besides what is wrong with that. I'm like you as a matter of fact. I'm heavier than you. I think the CNS diet is geared for guys like us. keep at it. It will be a little slower but it will be worth it I know. It is better to loose body fat slowly and gain muscle than to diet like crazy and loos more muscle in the long run. As far as you sleep have you looked into talking to a Dr. about sleep apnea

I'm reading through the Caffeine Therapy article again and the reason I quit the Joe is because CNS is about regaining insulin sensitivity. Caffeine is good for manipulating sensitivity and refilling glycogen stores on CBL. I don't see why we should be drinking coffee on CNS especially if obese/insulin resistant. Thanks alot for the support!!!

The point of coffee on cns is to blunt insulin as much as possible. Remember even though you are low carb and supplementing with fat, when you eat protein insulin still elevates to a certain extent, so the coffee is just that little extra add on to help keep it as low as possible. On another note, since you have been on CNS for so long now, i recommend taking a week off it and doing CBL during that time and then going back to CNS. A lot of people are using this method as a kick start when fat loss has stalled and has worked great for them, myself included. Others just take the week off dieting completely and that works great for them too.

Kiefer mentioned ditching even the PWO shakes with Alex during her contest prep to avoid any insulin spikes.I would also ditch the eggs, they might raise insulin levels.

Eggs should be fine. You want to be insulin sensitive, making your body insulin resistant is how you get diabetes...Control your insulin levels by what you eat... don't try to become insulin resistant.Any diet works better with exercise, it burns calories. Resistance training builds muscle which burns even more calories.

There are 2 primary reasons Kiefer recommends coffee.1. cholinomimetics: minor stimulants that can also suppress hunger2. caffeine: accelerated fat burning, increased adrenaline response, heightened awareness, improved strength, greater nitrous oxide accumulation in muscle tissue, transient insulin insensitivity, increases the speed at which we resynthesize and replenish glycogen after training.

First, you're going by the scale.  You could very easily have gained some muscle at the same time as you lost weight.Second, how long have you been taking creatine?  Creatine adds several pounds of water weight once it's loaded up, so if you started that when you started the diet, and the water weight from creatine gradually came on after the water weight from the prep phase was lost, it could blunt your perception of weight loss.Third, you said you cut out carbs completely "during the ULC portion of the day."  The whole day, except for the carb night itself, should be ULC.  Tell me that was just a mix up when you were typing. Also,  how did you go from 440 to 300?  If it was caloric restriction your body's energy expenditure could be lowered.  I am not recomending you cut calories.  I'm just saying it could take time for your body to start mobilizing more fat for energy.  Do you feel energetic during the week after entering ketosis?  If not, you may want to do a longer prep phase to make sure you are sufficiently fat adapted. Low carb diets should work for the vast majority of people but you should consider the possibility that the CNS protocol might not be the right one for you, especially since you are likely more metabolically disturbed than the average person.  Most ketogenic diets prescribe a much longer induction phase than 10 days.  Most recommend 3 weeks before the first carb up.  And others don't recomend carb ups at all until weight loss stalls.  You may try those things if CNS ultimately does nothing for you.

Thanks for clearing up things about caffeine. I shure do enjoy it in the morning! And yes I am doing ulc for 6.5 days a week. Sorry for the mixup. I'm going to skip the carb nite this week and shoot for 14 days ulc to see if it fixes things. As for the 140lbs weight loss, I got a job in a box factory which got me sweating alot! Some days the scale could go down 10 ponds! I also reduced portions and lost quite a bit that way. But that was a few years ago and I've been hovering at 290 since. Actually I lost 200 pounds at one point. From 440 to 240. I was vegan and poor for a year lol! I And I  got a job n a fancy burger restaurant and quickly put up 40-50 pounds eating delicious poutine!
