jrussoMemberHello Everyone. First of all, I want to state that I am a newbie on the forum and enjoy coming here to see what kind of new information I can gain from the website. Now, my question has to do with training. I workout at home with my 10lb free weights, these are the only weights that I have. Is it still possible to gain muscle using such light weights? I also doing do much cardio except walking. Is this ok? Will it destroy muscle if I walk for too long? How much is too much? any suggestions are helpful.

maxwkwMemberYou're probably not going to gain any muscle on carb night in general. You have even less of a chance with 10lb weights. That being said, if that's the kind of training you like. Do it.

jrussoMemberIf I did this diet and just did walking for fat loss, would that be ok? I have some muscle already- it would be nice to build more, but unfortunately, I cannot afford to go out and buy a variety of free hand weights. Im super low income, so its not an option for me right now. I am mainly using this diet to lose fat- this is my primary goal. I had to restart the prep phase this week because I had a cheat weekend this past weekend. How long can I fast for in the morning without losing the muscle I already have?

maxwkwMemberKeep your fasts to 12 hours or so. You can break it with just fats in your coffee if you like. Just don't stretch it too long. You can lose fat by just walking on the diet. Although, I would suggest you continue resistance training even of it isn't heavy to maintain what you have.

jrussoMemberI want to thank you for your input. I appreciate it very much. Another question that I have is, I love eggs. I always have 3 eggs fried in bacon fat with 4 strips of bacon, would it be ok to continue to eat this for breakfast? Also, I cook my meats in olive oil, is this ok since it is a fat? How will I even know when I hit Ketosis?

maxwkwMemberI wouldn't worry too much about when you go into ketosis. It's not that big of a deal. As far as your breakfast goes, that's great. Also, cooking your meat in olive oil isn't great. I'd go with bacon fat, or just get fattier cuts of meat and prepare them however.

The body adapts quickly, and 10 lbs. is not enough to really put on much muscle, if any. Bodyweight work might do the job, for a short time, depending on your level of strength... but, a muscle requires progressive resistance / constant challenge to grow. Growth is an adaption process... if you give the muscle zero reason to adapt, it won't.I suggest you join a gym.Cory

RoaringMad MacMember+1 to CoryIf you can't join a gym there are things around the house you can use for weights all sorts of things. Just remember the entire world did not revolve around a gym at one time and people did not thing about lifting weights as a tool for fitness. I worked in a county jail for years and saw how guys would fill trash bags with water and use that for resistance training. and use using rock and stuff like that. Look around your home house or where ever and you will be surprised what you can use for resistance.

+1Very good suggestion.I would suggest, if working out at home is something you must do, invest in some resistance bands (you can get some sets that go up to 230 lbs. of resistance PER arm) -- they will run you about $100-150. Get a Bosu Ball, or some surface you can use to lay across at angles. Get a door-frame pull-up device (~$30).Beyond this... get creative. Cinder blocks can work (and can be quite heavy), for instance. The gym will just be more convenient, so you can focus on your routine, not looking for tools.Cory

Yup. You can build strength using more than those tiny weights. Do bodyweight exercises. Local jungle gym at a park = pullup bar, any elevated surface can be used for box jumps, any wall for handstand pushups. An army surplus duffel and bags of sand provide limitless loading variations. Get creative. You can get quite strong without a gym membership.

jrussoMemberThank you everyone for the great ideas. I do have a sand bag at home which has about 25lbs pounds loaded. So I can start to incorporate that more into my routine. I am a mother of a 13 month old son, so I watch him during the day and work nights, so a gym membership is out of the question right now unfortunately.
