lloyd2012KeymasterHi All,I recently stumbled across an article talking about carb back loading and it immediately grabbed my attention, I first of all thought this can't be right, skipping breakfast to build muscle? Anyway I want to find out more, I cycle to work 25 km at about 7am in the morning, I then lift weights and train at 12pm and then cycle home again at 5pm. My goals are to build muscle as I have always enjoyed bodybuilding.I'd like to know can this diet work for me and be an improvement over a typical bodybuidling diet. Will I have enough energy for the cycle into work I usually drink an electrolyte drink, a bowl of oats, and a carb source.I'm concerned about using up all my glycogen stores cycling hard in the morning, and then trying to hit the gym still with no carbs. Can I load with carbs after the lunch workout?I'd love to hear your thoughts, will this work for my situation and what is the basic guide I would have to follow?ThanksLloyd

FairyGuestCBL is designed for putting on maximal muscle while minimising fat gain. Cardio isn't recommended

Good to hear you got the book. You will easily be able to go with no carbs in the morning and have tons of energy. If you are looking to build muscle I'd recommend having a fat/protein breakfast still, the cycling is simply going to require you eat more food to grow and it might be hard to do it without a breakfast.

bioengineerGuestIf you're cycling in the morning I'd recommend not skipping breakfast – as seen with the protocol in the book for people who train mid-day. I'm really not sure where CBL is tweaked for people who do this much cardio....that's where you'd need an expert opinion.

Lesli BortzParticipantYou could just walk to work!….or cycle really slow.Kidding.You won't have an issue with energy. I don't usually eat until 1:00pm and train around 9:30am and was initially concerned about training fasted thinking there was no way it could happen. BUT I have loads of energy with coffee and made great strength gains. Anyhow - you should listen to their advice about breakfast, I don't train at that time.GOOD LUCK!! I'm sure you can tweak it to work for your situation.

lloyd2012GuestThanks for the replies. I'm going to stop cycling in for now, at the very least while in the prep phase. I will be training at noon most daysDay two of prep and plan on doing some heavy squats and lunges later, that should train glycogen stores and hopefully speed things upLloyd

TheDanParticipantIf your goal is simply muscle gain i would cut out the cycling all together, it will hurt your mass gains on so many levels especially the type of volume you are used to. ( Assuming this is an option ) If you are worried about conditioning you could do HIIT sessions after your prep, which prove to be better on almost all performance levels than distance cycling.

lloyd2012Guestthink I'll drop it while on this program. Also I'm going to swap by 12 noon workout to 4-6pm, lunctime training sounds less than ideal after reading the book, and I wanna build the most muscle I cancheers
