RsaeireParticipantI was wondering about getting a workout bench, based on previous recommendations made by other forum users, and wondered what you guys thought about the below?York Warrior Ultimate Workout Weight Training BenchIt appears to have enough options for an all over body workout, i.e. back, arms, abs, legs etc, but the price has me thinking that it's too good to be true!

RsaeireParticipantThanks for the reply Big Tex! 🙂It doesn't seem to have any ability to assist with squats but I was just reading that it's better to squat without a machine. I'll be the first to admit that I don't have a lot of experience personally, but I've linked to 2 articles for reference which may, or may not, be correct.Link 1Link 2

Gl;itch.eMemberThis sort of thing is good initally when you first start weight training. But after gaining any significant amounts of strength they can be quite limiting (rickety, unstable, untrustworthy with large amounts of weight on them) IMO if you have the money and really want to train from home you are better off buying a decent power rack and a flat solid bench. Can also squat and do pullups etc from them.

RsaeireParticipantThanks for the reply Gl;itch.e.Do you have any recommendations for decent power racks and/or flat solid benches? I don't know much about them as I've only ever read up on standard workout benches, like the one mentioned in my original post.

Obviously need a barbell and some weights. You may be able to find some second hand stuff that'll work. And youll definately spend more than those other options you were looking at. But this sort of gear will last you much longer and give you heaps more options. If you wanted to spend more you could get something like this which also has a lat pulldown/cable row built inhttp://www.flexcart.com/members/elitefts/default.asp?m=PD&cid=167&pid=2585 but provided you get the basics youll have tons of options to last for ages. Rack= (Squats/Deads/Bench/Military as well as Partial Squats/Pulls/Presses. Pullups/Chins and the option to use bands)

This is funny, i was looking at these last night for my dad... he works out at his house and he is lacking that incline bench and a few other things... Some of these benches go up to $300+ - my only gripe is the build quality, as they all seem to be kind of flimsy to me. The ones i've seen were always unstable, like when u go to a restaraunt and you have to put a bunch of coasters under one of the legs to keep it from Rocking back and forth. lol  They look very promising though.

Thanks for the reply and the links. I'd definitely be spending more than I anticipated by going with either of the racks you linked to! While I do appreciate making an investment in workout equipment, I don't have the money or the space to get a rack; I didn't anticipate just how tall a rack would, or could, be.I workout in my bedroom so space is kind of limited so, after looking at the options, a bench might be my best bet, especially taking everything into consideration. I know the York bench I mentioned originally does appear kind of flimsy, BigR mentioned too, but it's looking more and more like the best option for me now.

It would make things much easier if I joined a gym, trust me I've been thinking about this myself, but it just wouldn't, pardon the pun, work out for me. 😉

LOL. very good!So is price and space your main concern here? Honestly if you are planning on having to train from home long term Id find a way to get some better equipment. Craigslist or something similar for secondhand may get you what you want cheaper either way you go.

If a standard power rack is not what you're looking for, try a sumo rack or half rack. Or at least some sturdy squat stands and a bench. The problem with these setups like in your picture, is that you can/will outgrow them very quickly and end up spending the money on the better equipment anyway. I've done this same thing, and I regret not buying the better rack setup to begin with. I think I still have the old equipment stuffed into a closet somewhere. Buy something nice or buy it twice.Â

RsaeireParticipantI ended up getting the bench in my first post. While I agree that the alternatives would be better in the long run, I don't have the money or space to facilitate them so this is the best option for me for the foreseeable future. I also got myself a barbell so I can workout my chest properly as I was using dumbbells before; I know, silly mistake.Anyway, I appreciate all the comments and I'm enjoying having a workout bench for the first time. Given my current size, I'll most likely be getting my money's worth 😉
