P.J.ParticipantWould it be fine to carb-backload after workouts on the deload week(4th week) of each 5/3/1 cycle?

Trevor G FullbrightModeratorYou can backload without resistance training, you just need to control the carb and sugar intake more so.So if you are just doing a light deload I would backload and just have a bit more control over what I eat.

Brandon D ChristParticipantI think it would be a good idea to add some of PSR sets from Shockwave as assistance. This way you are still working the muscles, but giving your nervous system a break.

dudsyMemberMaybe cut the carb loading amount in half?

Intensity JunkieMemberI personally cut myself off at 400 on CBL's on deload week

Yeah ibobland08 I was actually thinking about that. What about just doing Shockwave for deload weeks, staying below 65% of my 1 RM's, and skipping Level X?

tzanghiParticipantWould the same type of advice apply to someone who uses a light day mid-week to allow for recovery?I run Starting Strength Advanced Novice which means my light day is 2x5 light squats(80% of what I did the previous workout for 3x5), 3x5 Bench/Press Max, 1x5 Deadlift Max, 3x8 Dip Max. I take long rests and never feel that beat up from this workout, so I figured it didn't warrant a backload. I currently just have a PWO shake with ~60g whey, ~30g casein(micellar), and ~5g leucine and then eat a ULC meal 1.5 hours later. I'm sure it's pertinent, I'm trying to get some fat loss out of this.

VinnyJonesGuestDo the Clint Darden version of 5/3/1 and hammer the assistance work instead 😉

Just up the intensity really. Clint has some good vids on youtube you should check out.I've dropped the deload week completely. I just do 3 week waves because, in all honesty, the first week of a new cycle "feels" like a deload if you get my drift and I like to feel like I am making continual progress. Not that deloads are not helpful. I don't do 5/3/1 deadlifts which I think helps my chances considerably and my current DL routine means I take every 4th week off those. So I have plenty of recovery lower back wise.Check out my log for an idea of how I run 5/3/1:http://dangerouslyhardcore.com/forum/index.php?topic=4263.msg43847#msg43847
