I have been doing CNS for quite some time, with no good results. The reasons for this are probably linked with my hormonal imbalances (too high estrogen/too low progesterone), and the fact that I have been eating foods my body just hasn't responded well to… Now I know better, and I have eliminated those foods. I also realized that 7 days without carbs was too long, I need to do carbnite every 5 or 6 days. BUT, I have decided to compete in my first powerlifting competition that is in less than 6 weeks, and I need to get STRONG!!! Therefor I thought it was a good idea to to do CBL (Strength Accumulation) with a prep-phase (I took 4 days off from CNS before I switched after recommendations from my herbalist/nutritionist I see for my hormonal imbalances), but I might not do a full 10 days. I need to closely monitor my energy levels/how my body feels, because if my body senses more stress than it likes, my body will react very negatively again and possibly make me sick again.I am just curious if this is what I should be doing? I see that Mark Bell did CarbNite while powerlifting with success (even though he did express some obstacles), but he already had the strength... I have a combined lift of 380lb now untrained in powerlifting, and we're aiming to get me up to a 500+lb raw by November 17th. I'm currently at a 22% bf which is very high for me, I am usually at 16% when I am at normal hormonal health. I need to get ridiculously strong in 6 weeks, so I'm thinking I should just focus on that by doing CBL, then go back to CNS up till I get my bf down to 12%. What do other people think? Are there other female powerlifters with advice in here?

Congratulations on entering your first meet! You'll have a great time there as long as you remember to focus on only YOUR numbers. Open light and aim for small PRs.Have you read this article http://www.dangerouslyhardcore.com/2113/carb-nite-how-you-can-and-should-get-stronger/ ? This is how Jesse Burdick and Mark Bell trained while they were on Carb Nite and got stronger. I'd say what you're going to do should depend more on where you are with regards to the weight class you want to compete in versus your body fat (which really isn't all that high). For your first meet, just jump in whatever weight class you fit in to comfortably and worry about being competitive later on.Simply, go on whichever program you feel best on!

Either program will work, it all depends exactly what you want to get out of your goals.  If you want the real strong emphasis on increasing strength, go with CBL.  If you really want to see BF drop, go with CNS.  If you're in between, mix it up for the next 6 weeks. If you do CNS, make sure you take your PWO shake with hydrolysates and leucine.  I strongly attribute my strength gains to these supplements. If you do CBL, just keep the carbs low.  Aim for 1g/lb BW of carbs during the backloads if you're backloading 2-3 times per week.  If you're backloading more, shoot for a 2:3 or 4:5 ratio of g of carbs to lbs of body weight and keep fat moderate to low during backloads.People think the pitfall of CBL is that you need to fine tune it and tweak it, but I find this to be better because it allows you to tailor it to your goals.  Hope this helps!

I think you already have a good strategy.  CBL for 6 weeks then switch to CNS.  Strength seems like your top priority so i wouldn't fool around.  Just my opinion though

Thanks for the link! I needed to read that article again! I did my first squat workout yesterday, and turns out my beginner 1RM is 210lb, not 145 like I previously thought! My coach was impressed! I hope to drop about 10lb so I can get into the 148lb weight class and still get up to a combined lift of 580+. I'm trying to convince my coach about CBL and CNS... It would be cool to have him start CBL too and have him win even more gold medals! He'll be competing at the meet too.

This is really good info! Thank you! Yes, I'm doing Wendler's 5-3-1 starting next week. This week is testing. I haven't decided if I want to do the 4 days a week training or the 3 days a week training. My plan is to only carb-backload after the 3 or 4 core workouts, and doing ULC all other days. I've been doing ULC since Sunday and I had my first squat testing yesterday. Today I'm completely done, total brain fog and very low work capacity. I had to leave work early. This must mean that I'm in ketosis already, right? I can't wait to do my first carb-backload on Monday, after my next squat workout -if I can make it till then. I still have Chest tomorrow and Deadlifts on Friday. Any tips for making it through till Monday? 🙂

The brain fog really disappeared after a short time, but it was only during workouts for me.  If you feel like you really need a boost of energy, some form of MCTs with coffee should provide a boost.  Also, take this time to really focus on your motor skills of the lift.  Before I started the prep phase, I just went through the motions, but the lack of carbs taught me how to focus on the lift and channel all my energy.  I think I'm a better lifter because of it.  I'm of the opinion that everyone should go through a low-carb period of lifting in order to improve their motor function and ability to focus. Also, there's the fact that you're dropping bodyfat through Monday.  That thought always helps me with motivation.  That and I love fatty meat and eggs, so I really enjoy ULC days.
