ConnKeymasterHey guys…This Friday I'll be starting the prep phase of CBL. (Waiting 'till Friday to get my fridge and supplements in order. Halloween--let's be honest about this--is another consideration, as is the fact that I just can't afford a period of mental lethargy this coming week.)Here's the deal. Unlike some people, going very-low-carb is for me a big thing. A BIG thing. I like my carbs, and the last time I tried a near-zero-carb nutrition strategy I felt like crap.On the one hand, I know this is only for ten days, but on the other it IS ten... full... days.
I'm going to need to pull every psychological trick in my book to get through it. Anyone out there have tips or tricks for getting through a stretch like this? Appreciated! October 28, 2012 at 6:13 pm #96748
Trevor G FullbrightModeratorTips to get through it are eat lots of fat, get plenty of sodium, and maybe supplement some potassium. Getting some MCT or Coconut oil will also help.Welcome to DH and good luck!

Richard SchmittModeratorYeah eat fatty cuts of meat! Like steak and bacon and hamburger patties. Stuff you think you couldn't before but can now. Your ultimate goal is for 0g of carbs during the ten days, but you'll do great. Have fun with eggs too just add some butter or coconut oil. Good luck and welcome!

It's only a big thing because youve made it one. I like my carbs too but that doesnt mean they like me. The closest to zero carb you get the better. Im willing to bet the other times youve gone low/no carb you haven't prioritised fats. If you get enough (and of the right kinds) of fats you shouldnt really feel that dodgy and definately shouldnt lack energy.

ConnGuestThanks for the tips, guys, good stuff there. You've all hit on something that I probably did really wrong last time: fat. Not enough and wrong kinds. I'm so programmed into the “low fat” and “lean” paradigm that I'm sure I probably unintentionally sabotaged myself.Keep the suggestions coming if you got 'em!

mda1125GuestDay 5 and Day 7 were the worst for me but Day 1-3 were fine… Day 8 I was stronger than any other time previously on carbs and Day 9.5 to Day 10 I had what is called the “Atkins Flu.”But I didn't have much of the "mental lethargy" that all bodybuilders who've never gone ULC talk about. Mostly because those guys don't cut carbs that low and if they do, they also cut out fats and protein load.If you keep the fats higher (avocados, coconut oil, bacon, leaner but not super lean meats) it's not bad! I felt pretty lean by Day 10, relatively strong and there were no cravings so hardcore that I couldn't take it.It wasn't all that bad. The talk about it and anticipation are much worse than the actual doing of it.Plus I felt 100% less bloated and had less gas (sorry to gross you out but true). It really nailed the # of carbs I needed. I lost 4.5lbs which put me at 409g of backloaded carbs.Interestingly enough, 409g is the exact amount the ISSA put me at as well but of course, different carbs and different timings.ULC is not bad. I didn't even need the allowable 30g. I just cut them entirely.
