Bob HaganParticipantI really enjoy one of these in the morning(can't drink coffee). Robb Wolf (who I have followed a lot) seems certain that this will create an insulin spike. CNS seems to be OK with zero carb drinls but prefers sucrulose to aspartame. anyone aware of any new opinions by Kiefer?

Richard SchmittModeratorYep! Zero Carb Rockstars are ok, the Ace-K can stall progress…but I've yet to seen it. Why? Because I drink them occasionally. ;D I would not use Sugar Free because of the Milk Thistle crap in it. Just an observation that I've seen and being there is “milk” might do something negative.

Richard SchmittModeratorAlso Sucralose is great, and aspartame is ok as well. If you start to stall, cut those out as re assess.

Bob HaganParticipantThanks, I have cleaned up my diet so much it is really the only vice I have left and I have come to enjoy the caffiene. MY other drink of choice is lots of green tea so at least if I do have problems it should be pretty easy to figure out where they are coming from.

Milk Thistle/Silymarin (extract) is an herb and not related to dairy in any way and is purported to have curative/detoxifying effects on the liver and may have benefits to estrogen metabolism. I have been using it for overall health benefits as I was not aware of metabolic effects that might stall fat loss.Do you have anything else on this, BigTex?

Milk Thistle is also good for digestion. It makes the stomach more acidic.

Richard SchmittModeratorYeah I forgot to update this when I did some checking around, thanks Ibob. The Sugar Free Rockstars are ok too, I recently found out that the Absolute Zero Monsters are probably not ideal in the ULC part of the day due to Maltodextrin ;D

Marty P KochParticipantI think mainly it has to with amounts of some of these 'non-ideal' or (potentially) insulinogenic ingredients. Again, try it and see what happens. We are all individuals and respond differently. I think the guidance offered here is always in the best interest of the practitioner and will naturally err on the conservative side, that is to say, least likely to disrupt/deter progress.In re: the Quest bars - SOME of the Quest bars have a lot of carbs (~17 grams per bar) in the form Iso-Malto Oligosaccharrides that they 'net-out' claiming it as fiber. While this starch-derived digestion-resistant form of soluble fiber is naturally occurring, it is in many cases manufactured for use in foods as an additional artificial sweetener. Is Quest using only the 'natural' form? Not sure. Does it matter? Not sure. However, I'm not sure it has been exhaustively studied in terms of its digestibility and effect on blood glucose and insulin response. It seems there may be some effects similar to sugar-alcohols we are warned away from (maltitol, sorbitol, etc.). Additionally, there is individual evidence that eating a bar will spike Blood glucose anywhere from 30-90 mg/dl... depends on the individual, so buyer beware.That said, is it safer/better to use mg increments of Ace-K vs. 17g of this other 'stuff'... You make the call and try it out to see what happens. Just remember that user mileage may vary. 😉
