MagnumTMemberWas wondering about using a modified Carb Nite for an upcomming bout I have. I need to drop around 20 or so pounds, while maintaining training intensity. Anybody think this could work, or have a general idea how I can run this? Any help is much appriciated

thestiffmeisterParticipantI boxed before, so I'm your guy. When is your bout? Same-day weigh-ins or 24 hours time to rehydrate? It could work, but we need to have more info.

Richard SchmittModeratorYeah more information is needed Magnum. I mean it's possible but if you need to drop weight quick then a regular CNS is probably best?

thestiffmeisterParticipantTrue Tex, I mean you should have your last carbup like 7 days before the bout anyways, CNs will make your weight swing up. The thing about making weight, if you are doing it correctly, is to use water manipulation. You can lose a couple pounds if you are fatter, but in a few weeks don't expect to lose that much real weight. I was walking around at 154 when I cut down to 141. One week, no carbs, heavy water intake, then the last 3 days cut back on food/sodium/water to flush everything out, sweat a few pounds off in the sauna, and voila. The morning of the weigh-ins I was 141, a couple hours later 151. We had two weigh-ins, almost failed the second one. If I had been given 24 hours to rehydrate/fill-up, I would probably have fought at 137.Basically, just wanted to say the weight you will lose will not really be fat anyways, and the closer to your bout the less carbs you should consider having.

Richard SchmittModeratorOh yeah, it'll be the water weight mostly dropped. Especially if you keep protein and fat intake up and follow the diet as is. Then after making weight I'm sure you can load up on foods to help you push through it. I'd like to see how Joel Jamieson, the MMA coach would apply CNS or CBL to that method.

MagnumTMemberThanks, and sorry I didnt lay out more information then beforeMy fight is mar 2nd. Same day weight inWalking around at about 194-195lbs. fighting at 168. 16.9% BF (give or take).I beleave its same day weight in. Ive done short water cuts, and intermitten hot baths before. 3 days of weight training. 3 days of skill training ( may tack on more) 2-3 days of conditioning ( sprints, prowler)

MagnumTMemberIve also been really strict with my calories too. So far around 1,200 ( but probolly going to go up to 1,800 come back to training next week)

thestiffmeisterParticipant1200 calories?! That's crazy, start by upping the food. No need to count the cals really with your activity level, just do CN and see how you progress before even thinking about introducing more carbs in your diet. Hopefully you haven't completely fucked your metabolism into oblivion by now. If you start feeling like shit on ULC, eat more food. Lose a few pounds, then water manipulate during your last week. I'm not talking about the sauna, either, I mean flushing the water out of your body through diet. Anyways, for same-day weigh-ins cutting too many pounds the day of the fight is a recipe for disaster.

MagnumTMemberGotcha !Only reason I ran cals that low was cause I was forced down by the flu this week so I wanted to atleast get the weightloss ball rolling, even If I was stuck doing nothing. I actually ran CNS before and I must say training was brutal. I felt flat, no explosiveness, was getting my ass handed to me most VLC days, and my strength didnt really diminish, but I definetly didnt get stronger either. Thats why I asked about a modified version of CNS. Maybe something TKD like with a pre work out carb meal (25-50g's) and then maybe a carb nite/refeed once a week ? Dont know if thats would even work, Im just shooting at the wind right now

thestiffmeisterParticipantActually, if I were you I'd track my progress with CN to see how quick the pounds are coming off, then maybe introduce a reasonable mid-week backload, but that all depends on how fast you lose the weight. Your performance will suffer from any diet, I have been there, done that. ECA helped me push through the fatigue, but I lacked some pop in my shots and gym sessions had to be scaled back. If you're gonna fight at 168, I would suggest staying closer to that weight in the future, but for now all you can do is damage control.CN is much better for damage control than a typical caloric restriction diet. You didn't make gains back then, but you also didn't lose any strength. If you had done it the chicken and brocoli way, you would have lost some, I guarantee. I wouldn't fiddle around with intra-workout carbs, you could do a MCT/isolate shake though, might not hurt. By messing too much with the formula you risk slowing down the weight/fat loss, and then end up in terrible condition for your fight because you'll have to take drastic measures to make weight. I say lose as much as possible now and as fast as you can, then coast a bit and maybe add a backload to perform/recover better.

MagnumTMemberThanks alot for the help bro !ECA has been somthing I've been doing, but took a 2-3 week break from it so I wouldn't "fry out". Starting that tommorow before my conditioning. For now I'll stick to one carb nite a week (saturday) and see how it pans out. I mean I've been there before, I know how shitty it felt, but If it must be done, it will be done. I remember being on the AD, and even after two massive refeed days by wendsday I was squashed. I had the idead of having a carb nite on a sat/sun and maybe an additional backload on wendsday night.

thestiffmeisterParticipantLike I said, it's gonna suck a bit at first, but if the weight comes off easily, then you can start adding carbs on another night. You shouldn't be peaking right now anyways, it's just a mental thing. I know it sucks, but it's better to start adding the carbs as you get closer to your fight rather than have to do something drastic at the last minute to lose weight.

I totally agree !Do you think a pre-workout shake of like coconut oil (MCT's)+creatine+bcaa's + whey isolate, or casein could work for a little boost pre work out ? PWO I like about 50g's whey isolate w/ creatine and bcaa's
