PhattyMemberSorry if this is just daft, I'm not trying to modify an already good routine or anything, just curious.Has anybody on here tried 5/3/1 on a 4 day cycle instead of over a week?For example:Monday - squatTuesday - benchWednesday - OHPThursday - deadliftFriday - offSaturday - squatSunday - benchMonday - OHPand so on.My knowledge on lifting is lacking as I'm still very much a novice. Like I said, if this is just a daft idea...

wingmanGuestWhats your reason for wanting to do this? Perhaps if you shed some light on what you're trying to achieve, someone will help you structure it. As you have it might be ok depending on how much assistance/accessory work you want to do. 531 on its own is extremely low volume.

I'm getting bored of Stronglifts 5x5. I want to do something with more volume through the week, but still strength oriented.I figure with 5/3/1 there's ample time to recover between each workout, so squashing it in to a 4 day cycle (4 day on/1 day rest) would be okay.I'm currently lifting 3 days a week. After my 5x5 sets I do 1-3 accessory exercises but it's beginning to take up too much time. I'm sometimes in the gym for 2+ hours plus a 20 minute walk there and back.

1999hawkMemberwendler has a frequency program for 5/3/1. run through 2 cycles in one month. no deload.

I'm currently doing something along those lines... usually a 4 or 5 day cycle, which I've had going for a few months now, and I haven't had any issues. I've got a log in my signature, though I admittedly haven't provided a whole lot of commentary thus far.

fenrisulfrGuestThat would be very taxing on your CNS(nervous system in this case). Probably get no gains since your muscles would never fully recover. Now if the second half of the week was really high reps with light weight that could be good, but that wouldn't be 531.

rallenGuesti had success with 3 on 1 off, but cycling the workoutsbench, squat, military, rest, deadlift, bench, squat, rest, military, deadlift, bench, rest, etc..i was eating @ a maintain level, wasn't really trying to bulk just get some small strength gains without adding anymore body weight( was already at 15% bf but didn't want to start cutting yet), no cardioi only did it for 2 months, but i didn't deload.. i did miss a couple days over the whole 2 months, i just counted that as my body telling me i needed an extra day off. typically you want to do 5/3/1 during a bulk, and when your bulking you want to take some time out of the gym, 2 on 1 off is the best in my opinion
