chico1MemberAs I recall Kiefer's article about “Anabolic Cardio” prescribes taking 5 grams of leucine pre HIIT session, and doing cardio about an hour or two before you hit the weights…although this may be th best solution….with my work schedule I don't have that much downtime in the evening when I get off. I want to start adding in more HIIT sessions to lean out before beach season but on my 1-2 off days from weight training per week, I usually need my rest.Would it be suitable to do light HIIT sessions immediately before hitting the weights 2-3 times a week? By this I mean instead of 6-10 ALL OUT 1 Minute Sprints...maybe a 5 minute warmup and 3-4 1 Minute ALL OUT Sprints or 45 Seconds followed by 2-3 minutes of active recovery...then go straight into my scheduled lifting session? NOTE: I want to continue to put on muscle mass so if its detrimental to this, or will cause slowed gains I need to find another way. Thanks for any input!

hack_attackParticipantFor maximum fat loss results, you could always do fasted HIIT first thing in the morning, then do lifting in the afternoons.

I wish I could...I work pretty long hours so the two a day approach isn't really doable for me.

If your diet is on track and training is done correctly (meaning a split for weights and HIIT) you'll be good. Tagging the ANAC is something to help with on stage and your complete goal to get on stage without loosing any muscle.

Thanks for the reply. As far as splits go...I do the following:Monday: Chest, Transverse absTuesday: Back, Calves and/lower ab workWednesday: ShouldersThursday: OffFriday: Arms (biceps, triceps, forarms and grip workSaturday: Legs (squats and deads emphasis)Sunday: off or if I'm feeling rested enough I jump back into my day 1 (chest)Where would you recommend I input HIIT?

Richard SchmittModeratorDo you honestly need HIIT? I would combine arms with shoulders and do HIIT after back

chico1Member@BigTex I would love nothing more than to not do any cardio work but if I want to lean out…it's necessaryLet me rephrase my question, because I feel like maybe I'm not asking it the right way. Does doing HIIT immediately before or after lifting sessions negatively impact your ability to add muscle mass?

After, yes.Before, it could help.

Trevor G FullbrightModeratorAlso, HIIT is not needed in order to lean out. It helps, and allows you more "opps" room in diet, but it's not needed.

hack_attackParticipantBasically, yeah. As the article states, there is some implication that it can help muscle growth if done in cycles before weight training. However, it activates several pathways that inhibit mTOR when done after training, which would in turn inhibit muscle growth. Also, HIIT is not necessary to lean out, but it can help in that regard, especially fasted.

chico1MemberOkay these were the answers I was looking for! So if I can't do HIIT fasted in the morning…then I CAN do it immediately before my workouts (in 3-6 week cycles for example) to assist in leaning out without effecting muscle building? And if I am doing it right before lifting sessions...should I tone it down?

If possible, give yourself 10-15 minutes to do mobility work between the two. When I do that I have better performance in my training session.
