opinions?

    i tried search but didn't find exactly what i'm looking for as an answer.  i was wondering what the thoughts on the forum were for whether to take bcaa's before lifting while in a fasted state?  is it useless?  benficial? detrimental?  i know leucine is preferred but i have some bcaa's i liked to use up first before purchasing leucine unless it's detrimental in which case i will just order it.    thanks

    Mix it with your protein shakes after training.

    Leucine is in BCAA's, but is the most important of the aminos. BCAA's can be taken after but also intra-workout to prevent muscle breakdown, although there's some debate how effective this is or if it's necessary. It will cause insulin spike, so if fat loss is primary goal then best avoided during workout supposedly. I've seen some high profile reputable trainers and fitness professionals recommend it, but each to their own of course. It won't do any harm that's for sure.

    Like suggested above ^; I mix BCAA with my Protein and start drinking it at the end of my workout. I use “Modern BCAA” because its 8:1:1 ratio is primarily the recommended BCAA “Leucine”. Ive had good results, i just make sure to eat my ULC meal around an hour after the shake because i don't want the spike to drive fat from the ULC meal to storage. Not sure if thats a common protocol but like i said I've had success in doing so.

    This won't apply if backloading though, as you'll be slamming the carbs after your workout.

    Best bet is give it a shot for a week or two and see how your body responds. If you are bigger and leaner you should be fine. If you are on the heavier side and need to drop a lot of fat then maybe hold off until you get to a leaner point. I just added Amino 1 from Muscle Pharm during my workout. I start drinking it half way through until the end of the workout.

    Very true.. If your backloading I would think BCAA would be even more beneficial, especially toward the end of your workout. I would personally mix some up during a backload, or supplement a capsule version as they will help shuttle nutrients to muscles. Im sure it can't do any harm.

    I think people worry a bit too much with regards to insulin shuttling fat away from a meal. Unless those fats are MCTs it just ain't gonna happen so quickly, only if there are fatty acids in the bloodstream which won't be the case for at least a couple of hours after any meal. Insulin spikes don't last that long by definition.

    I would assume after as well, unless you're a serious heavy lifter and feel lethargic during your lifts, then spiking your insulin with hydrolysates and/or BCAA's 15 minutes or so before your lift, then sipping a carb/protein shake during the workout… I'm pretty sure that's the only situation that I've heard from Kiefer that would justify BCAAs before a workout.
