ReisParticipantGreetings:After a 6-month go with CNS last October to this past March, I had decent but not earth-shattering results on the diet. However, my food choices were very loose, in that I kept all varieties of cheeses, processed meats and greasy foods in the mix. Not to mention my Carb Nites were the stuff of legend, as far as mass consumption of junk was concerned. I've been out of the gym with a shoulder injury (snatch gone bad...stressed rotator cuff), so I knew I needed to get the diet on lockdown while I was less active during recovery. This time I figured I'd try CNS with a strict Paleo palette, and keep the Carb Nites relatively clean. After just a week of Paleo with liberal carbs, my 10-day orientation and my first Carb Nite I'm already down 15 pounds! This time around my proteins are pretty much all grass-fed steak, natural deli poultry & organic chicken, wild salmon, canned tuna & sardines and occasional bacon. Carbs via kombucha drinks, coconut water & veggies. Fats are mainly pastured butter, MCT oil (i.e. BP coffee) and coconut oil. Snacks include grass-fed beef jerky, Steve's Paleo Krunch bars (1/4 bar is 4 carbs), and Steve's grass-fed Paleo sticks. On my Carb Nite I started off with 3-4 cups of white rice, followed up with 3-4 cups of mashed baked sweet potatoes (no fat added). Downed it with 32 oz of coconut water (with pulp). Later in the evening had more of the rice and sweet potatoes with pastured butter added, and finished off with an entire Green Black Organics 85% cacao chocolate bar.The interesting thing was that I weighed myself going into the supermarket on Saturday and I was down 13 pounds. Weighed myself again the next day (after carb nite) and I was down another 2 pounds...strange given the post-Carb Nite expectation of weight gain.Either way it's going great, and there may be more to the clean aspect of doing CNS with Paleo than I originally thought.

SpatzModeratorSounds good! I've been meaning to clean up my carb nite and stick with rice and sweet potato, but it has yet to happen. 🙂 maybe next time 'eh? I look forward to seeing your progress!

Tony SnowParticipantWhat were your protein sources on your carb night and was the butter and cacao your only sources of fat? Congrats by the way!

Thanks. I didn't take in any protein during the Carb Nite. I pretty much hit my daily protein #s earlier in the day so I didn't sweat it...Yes on the butter & chocolate...Should either of the above be tweaked for max benefit?

I'm intrigued... ??? Vegetable broth, apple slices, and pure white sugar I presume? Though you may get a few trace grams of protein in the apple slices...So pretty much you just didn't count your protein grams? What about any meats you may have eaten during CN, what were they and how much?

Yeah, you have me intrigued too. Not sure what the benefits of including protein in your CN would be if you are hitting your numbers for the day. Any one want to weigh in on this?

I had sufficient protein (230g=target weight) via eggs with chicken, deli turkey, grass-fed skirt steak, beef jerky and Tanka buffalo bars spread out through the day prior to the Carb Nite (I consider the Carb Nite's inception to be 4PM when I actually eat the first bowls of rice). During the actual carb nite I didn't have protein, or at least any significant sources of it. I ate copious amounts of white rice, sweet potatoes, grass-fed butter and the 85% cacao bar, with mostly coconut water to drink. It would be interesting if carb nites would be more or less productive based on the timing of protein intake, as this week I had a chef salad after I began the carb nite, which amounted to about 80g of protein, after eating multiple bowls of mashed sweet potatoes. We'll see how the scale/body looks in the days to come. Thanks for all of the feedback & intrigue...
