MikeParticipantHi guys,I'm changing my work schedule next week and I'd like to get some advice. For the last 3 months I've been doing CNS with awesome results, but right now I want to switch to CBL. Im planning on going 1-1.5:1 ratio of carbs to bodyweight, so it means about 200-250 g of carbs per backload, 4 times a week after each session.But since I start work at 12 and finish at 8 PM im wondering if I should work out at evenings or switch the weightroom to morning hours before work. If I decide to leave my training at evening hours, I would finish my workout around 10:30-11:00 PM - isn't that too late for backloading? I would have my PWO shake with 50-70 grams of glucose right after training and one or two meals (rice, jellybeans ;), etc.) when i get home. I'm usually going to sleep at midnight or 1:00. My question is if it still would be allright to backload in the evenings or is it too late and I should switch to morning training before work? Or maybe start doing carbs intra-workout just to move the insulin spike a little earlier?Would the late carb consumption negatively impact my nighttime GH release greatly? Or is it something I don't have to worry about that much?What are your suggestions?Thanks!!

Richard SchmittModeratorNo it's not too late for backloading if you wantng to continue evening resistance training. I would keep the carb meals for being that late to only 1 meal or maybe 2 small meals. It all depends on when you get to sleep and making sure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. You can have carbs up to bed, but I personally feel an hour or two before bed seems to be better, as an opinion. If you want to train mornings, just stick to 1 meal in the evenings prior to a morning resistance training session.

MikeParticipantThanks, yeah i would eat one/two small meals as soon as i get home, stop eating one hour before going to sleep. I get plenty of sleep, 8-10 hours every night so that's not a problem. I was just concerned about insulin interfering with GH release, but i guess if I keep the backload quick and high glycemic it wont be so much of a concern.

TCBParticipantInsulin will only interfere with GH if it's still elevated when GH normally would start secretion.. So if you're cutting off your meals an hour before bed, you should be just fine. I think the rule of thumb is that GH secretion can't begin until appx 2 hours after insulin levels have returned to normal, which really won't take that long given the high GI/GL type foods we use.
