The difference is results between 5/3/1 and smolov jr will be massive.  I've put 30+ pounds on my squat and deadlift in three weeks.  5/3/1 will give you a 10 lb increase in that period. If you think you have a lot of room to grow in your squat then smolov jr isn't a bad idea.  Do not deadlift or do any kind of squat/deadlift variation for assistance.  Non barbell assistance should be fine though.  Feel free to keep doing 5/3/1 for your bench or military press (not both).

I would say stick with the 4x/wk like Wendler planned. He is a smart dude, he picked 4 days as ideal for a reason. If i remember, he had options for fewer times a week, not more. Anyhow, instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater why not just tweak the assistance lifts? How is your squat technique? What assistance lifts are you using? I added 50lb on my squat through 3 cycles of 5/3/1, but that was after a lay-off admittedly. 360 to about 415. this was about 2 years ago. For assistance i used 100 bw lunges, 50 bw GHR's(that took a while to build), And weighted crunches. My legs grew like crazy on that, but my legs grow on anything really.
