Scott AueParticipantQuick SA question: just wondering what those who've employed the SA protocol have ingested first thing in the morning?It seems Keifer suggests anything from coffee with artificial sweetener only to heavy cream to a full a.m. accelerator shake + possibly delaying food until as late as 1pm.All this stuff has pros and cons related to more BF loss or more anti-catabolic/muscle gain benefits (i.e. whey in the a.m.).Just wanted to get some thoughts from those who've experimented.Thanks very much for any experiences/advice.

Richard SchmittModeratorI didn't understand this question all to well and the post following the question. Are you asking what we have done or used upon waking and first thing in the morning? If so, personally I have the AM Shake (whey with MCT oil, and caffeine) following a meal a couple hours later when able. He doesn't suggest delaying food that long, but no longer than at least 12 hours from your last meal. You can have coffee with HWC and seems to be superior compared to butter but doesn't mean to not use it. Just provides no benefits that was claimed it does.

Scott AueParticipantHi Tex. Sorry if I wasn't clear. Btw. these are just 'fine tuning' questions…1) As stated by Keifer in the past, intermittent fasting (IF) is a sub-set of CBL. Having used IF in the past, it uses the same environment present in the morning to an advantage (i.e. the body is in an ideal fat burning environment upon waking). So if u don't eat, then your body metabolizes your own fat stores for fuel. The trick is the balancing act between protein needs for muscle growth and how long you can extend the fast without risking catabolism.This being said, I see both pros and cons to the morning guidance for CBL and specifically the SA protocol:Pro: ingestion of HWC with a.m. coffee provides a calorie load (anti-catabolic) and helps to further/support ketosis by supplying only fat as fuel 1st thing in the morning.Con: the supply of ANY calories 1st thing basically eliminates the possibility of your body burning its own fat stores because the body is being supplied calories via diet.Takeaway point: if enough protein has been ingested the night before to prevent catabolism the next morning, then a short fast (skip breakfast, HWC etc.) may be a superior method for fat loss (burning of body fat stores).
