markccjKeymasterI was wondering if a small amount of coconut water (12g CHO, <1g fat, <1g protein) is acceptable during a backload?Apparently it has a GI of 30 something, so very low. It is a small amount of CHO though, and would be consumed with some high GI rice chips.

Richard SchmittModeratorI personally wouldn't because of the low GI level.

Gl;itch.eMemberI think that'd be fine. Unless Kiefer tells me otherwise such small amounts would likely have a very small overall impact. Its called dose response. Too much of a slow carb would totally hamper your efforts but miniscule amounts would be negligable. If you want to add this in I would do it at the start of your backload so any possible lingering effects wear off by the end of the night. Coconut Water would help with electrolyte replenishment and if you threw some dextrose in with it, or a protein shake youd have a great combo for glycogen replenishment as well.

RoadblockParticipantWhy do you want to include it in your CBL? What's your reasoning?RB

plaquexMemberYou want a superduper insulin spike and not a slow and steady insulin “spike” – avoid the low GI stuff as much as you can.If you want some veggies etc. then get them in the ULC part of the day and on your ULC days if you're doing CBL SA.

This man gets it! Its all about overall content. Sure you want to eliminate/minimise the low gi stuff but such a ridiculously small amount is not going to kill progress. Granted, to keep things simple its alot easier to be black and white about things and just say no to anything that slightly deviates from the recommendations. And for anyone starting out thats certainly advised. This is what through me for a loop when Kiefer mentioned Glycemic Backloading on the Brian Caroll Biojacked episode.Just so long as OP doesnt start thinking "well if 12g is allowed Im sure I can get away with 120g!!!"

Trevor G FullbrightModeratorIt's low GI because of the fructose content. It wont release slow like fiber righ carbs (whole wheat bread) would, it just doesn't cause much insulin release at all. Feel free to have it, a small amount shouldn't hurt at all.
