If train late at night you will want to use 100-200 g, because since it's late, you probably won't have enough time to backload.  If you literally work out and go to bed, you will definitely want 200 g of carbs in your post-workout shake.Normally the PWO shake is just for an insulin spike to end MPB, but if you have no time to backload, the PWO shake IS your backload.

If I did that with straight dextrose, that would be a sweeeeeeeeet PWO Shake!

I have been training fasted for the last few months but when I start to backload, I MIGHT start my workouts around 4pm (instead of the 10am-12pm range). My lifts never take longer than 60-80 minutes so, presumably, a 4pm training time would have my first carb meal of the day around 6pm. Prior to training I would have 2-3 meals/snacks (>30g total carbs, of course).Does anyone else have a similar set-up? Any preferences between training early and fasted or later in the day?

Thats exactly what Ive been doing. Just finished a 4pm training session and had 2 meals prior at 11:00 and 2:30. 1st carb meal was at 6:15 and will have another around 8:00. Personally, I really like this approach. However, I have trained fasted around 10 am a few times. I always thought I would hate training that way, but it was actually quite enjoyable and I was surprisingly strong and had great energy. But if you can switch to training at 4 you may want to consider that approach, as its the time Kiefer says is optimal. Although by following the recommendations in the book Im sure you cant go wrong either way.

You may want to watch your tolerance for too much dextrose at once.  If I have more than 40g of dextrose at once, I have some major stomach issues.  This is not a fun surprise, especially if you're out and about.  I actually took CELL-Tech for a while and my god.  I would drink it on the walk home from the gym (.5 mile) and I would have to run to the bathroom by the time I was 3/4 of the way through the serving.  The first time I took it, I drank it during class (I was in college at the time) and I had to run out of class to keep from crapping myself.  To quote my friend, as I ran out the door: “What did you eat? It smells like strawberries dipped in shit!”.  It was not a good week.  Ended up tossing the jug, and that stuff was expensive.
