FairyKeymasterYup. I know they spike insulin, so they will inhibit fat burning during a workout – but, the spare LBM. Just curious to hear thoughts.

MJCMemberI always take 10 grams bcaa right after my workout 25-30 min before the shake but sometimes I have purple wrath (eaa) in the second half of my workout

Cory McCarthyMemberNo, I used to though. Not since I adopted the DH diets.I am wary of spiking insulin, so I save my BCAAs for post-workout (12.22g @ 8:1:1 ratio in favor of L-Leucine).Right now, I just use a pinch of salt + 5g of creatine during my workout. Creatine is also anti-catabolic when it comes to muscle tissue.Cory

tzanghiParticipantFrom what I understand, it's not really worth it intra-workout. There's pretty much nothing you can do to stop catabolism during a workout. They're best saved for afterwards.

Gl;itch.eMemberI take Xtend and a small amount of protein hydrolysate during my workouts. Have done for ages. I feel it really helps with recovery and I have no problems getting through 90-120 minute workouts while low carb. If someone proved to me that Id burn substantially more fat and not lose any muscle by taking it out Id give it a try. But then us men dont burn much fat during exercise anyway so whats more important? Sparing muscle or burning a small amount of extra fat? If youre more concerned about fatloss than muscle gain Fairy (which I think you are) I would think its going to be more detrimental for you. Especially since during the workout is a Womans prime burning fat time according to old Kiefer John.

I do the same protocol as you glitch, about 10g of hydrowhey and 2 scoop Modern Bcaas with creatine and taurine intra-wo. I could give a shit less about spiking insulin around workouts, I wanna keep every bit of intensity, muscle and strength I can the other 22 hours of the day Ill worry about fat burning lol

storm47MemberMikehr,Why do you add taurine? What are the benefits of taurine during a workout?

I take 1g taurine before workouts, but only if I am not using Beta Alanine (I alternate the two)... b/c they compete for absorption, and the Beta Alanine wins.It aids electrolyte balance, can help with giving a pump (via cell volumization), boosts protein synthesis, also enhances creatine uptake.Cory

Brandon D ChristParticipantIntra-workout shakes are finally starting to make their way into these forums. I personally have one with hydrolyzed casein, leucine, and carbs (HBCDs).

LOL I never stopped! I mean yeah I started adopting Kiefers ways little by little over the last 2-3 years but I never dropped intra-workout shakes. IMO the hour or 2 spent in the gym is another opportunity to get extra food down! I dont understand anyone serious about gaining muscle and strength that doesnt have at least a little something during their workout.

I agree. I am a big fan of intra-workout shakes.

I will totally agree, perhaps on CBL.On CNS, however, I feel it is a different story (esp. when it comes to adding carbs to an intra shake, per ibob above).I'm currently on CNS, and I've only been drinking 16 oz. water + 5g creatine + pinch of salt during my workouts, and I've yet to lose any muscle... in fact, I've added muscle (not much, but a little). So, the lack of BCAAs or Leucine during my workouts has had zero negative effect.I should note, my lifting sessions on CNS are no longer than 60 minutes (maybe 90 on leg day).Cory

You shouldn't lose any muscle on Carb Nite, even without an intra shake.
