conny8412MemberHey All,What age were you when you got your first blood test? Im 24, soon to be 25 and i haven't had mine tested yet. I typically have some bad health anxiety, always worrying about issues or bad results so i wasnt sure what the best age was? Am i good to wait until summer? Or is it vital to get it now? The reason i thought about this was from reading some cholesterol posts in regards to CN and what not and i began to worry (especially while im dirnking my coffee with butter or Coconut oil in it lol). I dont know what the proper age is to get your first full panel blood test. Thoughts?

TCBParticipantYou don't really need to, at all.In Cholesterol Clarity by Jimmy Moore, several of the quoted physicians said they don't feel anyone needs to get their cholesterol tested because it really tells you so little about what is going on.If you just WANT to know, because you're curious, I'd do a lot of reading before hand so you can more accurately interpret your own results, and thus prevent any possible freak-out from what a conventional doc might say. Also along these lines, get more than just total cholesterol tested, get VLDL, triglycerides, LDL-P, and LDL-C, if possible. I'd also spring for high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein, and possibly hemoglobin A1C values. That will give you a more dynamic look at what's going on.

conny8412MemberYa, cholesterol was just a portion of my question i guess. I was talking a full blood test, testing all of the things you had mentioned. Do i need that at 24? I initially felt like i was way behind and needed it around 20 but not sure when youre supposed to get the first one?

TCBParticipantYou don't NEED it at all. Is there something amiss in your body that you feel test results may shed light on? If not, then I see no point in getting labs run. (Unless you're just a numbers geek like me, and get curious.)I equate it somewhat like this.. Your car is running fine, nothing seems wrong, but you're curious about your gas mileage, so you calculate it. Then you calculate it again the next tank and it's down a few. That can be misleading, the way you drove the car, the traffic you might've been in, etc can all effect your mileage and cause you undue concern that something may be wrong. The flip side is that your car may be running rough, you notice you're having to fill up more often, etc, so you decide to calculate mileage and discover it's consistently 20% lower than it should be. Now this is a helpful clue that more investigation needs to be done.

conny8412MemberThat's a great way to put it. No real issues, I just tend to worry myself sometimes and convince myself something is wrong with just the smallest issues hahaha. I'm thinking “jeez, I really need a blood test, never had one, what if I have cancer or diabetes or something along those lines”. In the meantime, nothing is really bothering me lol it's just me worrying

There are some lab services you can use that don't even require going through your normal physician. For example, I've used WellnessFX:http://www.wellnessfx.com/My referral link should get you a $10 discount, though you might also be able to find other discount codes online, and they sometimes have specials too.http://get.wellnessfx.com/fTgQ

Adrian CaronParticipantNumbers can be nice to have, especially since there are no time machines 😉

conny8412MemberThanks, ill look into this. Correct me if im wrong… Basically, i buy a package and they give me a script to print out and take to like a Quest? After i pay the $150 package cost, will i be billed anything else through quest? They just send the results to my online wellness profile? This may be cheaper than going on a script from my primary with my insurance…TCB did make sense when he said if nothing seems off, dont worry. but this wellnessfx is a nice option to have...

Yep through Quest, you print out the lab form WellnessFX gives you after you order your package and take it into Quest, they take the blood and then the results show up on the WellnessFX site. When you get another draw your results are shown so you can see the changes. The baseline package might actually be overkill, you get the majority of stuff in the e-checkup, you can do Diagnostics 2x for $49 it looks like, only WellnessFX bills you, no one else. I've just done the e-checkup, something like 25 different lab results. There are others out there too (I've never used) for example, http://www.privatemdlabs.com/ http://www.directlabs.com/

Nice, thanks! Maybe ill look into this at some point. I was really curious on when people get their first blood count/test age-wise. Is it common not to have it by my age (24)?

mczx1MemberHey All,panel blood test. Thoughts?
Good to have as a baseline. I would suggest not to "freak out" if cholesterol rises, which can even just be from a period of weight loss. I noticed my fasting glucose rising over a few years.

Adrian CaronParticipantI don't really know when is “best” to start, I just did it myself because I wanted the numbers and not having to go through my doctor. Your doctor will probably order similar labs depending upon age and health/family history. By the way the $49 for 2x is a starting price, if they have to partner with another lab network (like Quest) it can go up, for my state the 2x was $79, just checked. If you're trying to improve yourself with a focus on diet and exercise, these stats just add to your book of body information. You'll probably spend lots more on other supplements and stuff 🙂

Just turned 32, M. Started the WellnessFX tracking last year as it wasn't available in NH prior to.Looking back, I would have started it earlier to have that baseline data. If you can swing it, I'd do it at least once.

Brandon D ChristParticipantJust get your blood pressure checked. If that is normal and you are under 30 and not overweight, I'm sure everything else is fine, sans abnormal medical conditions.
