Mustafa IsleyenParticipantHere is something I was wondering for some time now.Within CBL you need carbs for:- insulin spike for muscle growth after training- to able to perform the next day when you are training.- stop certain hormones down regulating when being in ultra low carb protocol for more than approx. 7 days. Now what I am wondering is:Can we get a insulin spike after training without using carbs that is as efficient as when you do take carbs? Taking in a in account that performance for the next day is not an issue and the hormonal state will be resetted by taking carbs once a week.THX

i have tried both for a decent amount of time.. did a decent stint of no carbs at all and just protein pwo.. but overall found carbs pwo works immensely better.. i don't have a ton of carbs but found there is really little to no reason not to have the carbs pwo and you get much better recovery..

This is how I train now. Just use a protein shake to spike insulin post-workout and a large re-feed/reset on a weekly basis. I've been doing this for 6 weeks so far. Previously I did CBL with carbs after every workout and also with carbs every other workout.A post-protein insulin spike is definitely not as efficient as a carb induced spike. However, I lift high volume, high intensity 6x/week and to me the difference is minimal. The noted differences were that it took me about 2 weeks to adjust to my lifting style when I stopped regularly intaking carbs and those 2 weeks sucked...a lot. After those two weeks my work capacity and weights came back to normal and I went humming right along. My workouts are shorter now and that is where I think carb intake is superior if you are lifting in the gym for several hours as they give you the ability to keep pushing. I enjoy my shorter workouts now (I didn't cut volume on my main lifts either) as I am constantly pushing to do my sets in a set amount of time. I find that with the right sleep and food intake my recovery is fine as well.

TCBParticipantThe “as efficient” part is the key in your question. Can it be done without carbs? Absolutely. As efficiently/productively? I'm with Sano; I don't think so.

Gl;itch.eMemberIf you want to be as anabolic as possible it would make sense to satisfy the bodies energy requirements. Stored glucose as in muscle and liver is a rate limiter imo. When muscle and liver glycogen is low protein is more likely to be converted into needed energy rather than becoming building blocks for new muscle and tissue. If glucose requirements in muscle and liver can be satisfied then the body is able (or perhaps more willing) to make new metabolically expensive tissue.

CCTMemberI also tried the pwo shake with potein/leucine method, and found it to be less effective as carbs pwo. On eof the main reasons was that the carbs seem to help me recover better as Sano said
