shaffe43MemberCarb Nite is tonight and I was considering going to happy hour w/ a few co workers. I would have 2 drinks before leaving and having my carb nite meal. I would be going to HH at say 5:00pm and planning on eating the first carb nite meal at 630 or so at home. My question is: Would it be wise to eat something like a pop tart in order to spike my levels before having a beer. The beer would be a decent IPA or something along those lines?A poptart has the following:35g Carb & 7g Fat per pastry (come in package of 2) _______________________________________Carb Nite Plan430 - Pop tart x1 or x2 (Maybe?)5:00 - Happy Hour 2 x IPA 6:30 - Fajitas w/ Jasmine rice9:30 - 3 Slices of Pizza w/ Sausage and Steak11:00 - 1 Pint of ice cream (if still hungry but im not sure about this one)Thanks guys!**********************************************

Richard SchmittModeratorAs discussed many times before, through videos, podcasts, etc, that it is wise to begin low-no fat carb meal. A whey shake with leucine can help if it is all you have at that moment.

I had a CN last Spring that was mainly filled with beer and shitty carbs. It didn't seem to make much of a difference, however I wouldn't make it a regular basis.

I understand that it is best to start w/ that. I was just looking for potential alternatives to blunt the impact of not having an ideal start. The pop tart idea was to spike the levels. I could just have a drink and thats it prior to the meal. My question was more about a modification rather than the "suggested or best practice way" thanks for the replies.

Thanks for the reply. I deff get the whole make a choice and what do you want aspect of the diet (or any diet / training regimen). But i also plan to stay on this for multiple months (and im not a professional bodybuilder/xfitter/power lifter/ etc) , and I do think it would be nice at least on a carb nite every so often to have something I enjoy IE IPA. (I am sure ill have a horrible carb nite in there as well)I do enjoy a good beer and would like to understand how to best fit that into the carb nite. If that means after the first meal then so be it.Thanks!

shaffe43MemberThe other thing I could do is take a serving or 2 of Swedish fish.38g Carbs per serving 0g Fat. Would this help to spike levels prior?I am not sure if i am over thinking this? Thanks guys!

To be honest, it wouldn't hurt. I mean hell, having a CN of starting however you want with what you want isn't a bad idea. Since you'll be consuming alcohol, I don't see a problem with a Pop-Tart. I'm sure you could find better choices. The Swedish Fish will trigger something, since it does contain sugar. I would just enjoy yourself while you can, and then just make note of what you did over this CN to justify corrected changes for this week and following CN.

I was a big beer lover and to be honest it isn't the same to me since starting CNS. Only beer I really care for are lite beers. I used to enjoy IPA's and craft beer but it's not the same to me.

Interesting. I will let you know what I think after tonight. On a slightly off topic question:Would Instant Oatmeal be a good way to start the carb nite? It had an 83 on the glycemic index on the harvard page:http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsweek/Glycemic_index_and_glycemic_load_for_100_foods.htmI read in another post that instant oatmeal was not a great choice because it was slow releasing. I am pretty sure it was referring to instant as well as regular. Thanks!
