brianyoung74MemberIs kids cereal like golden grahams good enough carb choice for CBL. Also what are some your favorite high spike carb choices you all like for CBL

mwachtelParticipantGuess it comes down to how you handle wheat/gluten productssome more optimal choices for CBL would be rice krispys (the best IMO), rice chex, fruity pebbles, other corn and rice based cereals.

brianyoung74MemberI handle gluten just fine. But good point, i guess my question is does it really matter all that much if I have grains which are normally lower on the GI scale as long as they are a companied with a large sugar spike. PS yes i know gluten and grains go hand and hand

Is the 1st ingredient whole wheat? Can't remember.But, if thats the case, yea it is not optimal.Also, Kiefer does say even if you do not have a noticeable reaction to gluten products, you could still be having one, and if "derail" CBL results. guess, you'll have to test it out, CBL requires a fair amount of fine tuning for some people.

jsmithMemberIve always had a few bowls of rice krispys in my backloads. add some dextrose and itll get you most of your carbs.

mwachtelParticipanthomemade rice krispy treats are pretty perfect, becuase alot of marshmallows are primarily sweatened w/ glucose syrup, or something similiar

Think there is a thread about this, but off the top of the head1st BL meal:(optimal foods AKA lower fat foods)Potatoes (heavily cooked), over ripe banana, white rices, rice krispys, rice chexs?, dextrose powders.2nd backload: (more swiggle room for fattier stuff)Pizza, donuts, ice cream, cookies, turnovers (obviously), homemade goodies sweetened w/ dextrose are still the optimal choice, etc, etcThe list goes on and on, and changes based on different individualsIt might be easier to list things you should be cautious of/ limitFruits high in fructose(most of them), things sweetened primarily w/ HFCS, highly processed foods, etc

brianyoung74MemberThanks for that info. My frist PWO meal in whey with leucine,creatine and i also have low fat POP Tarts. I looked up the Glycemic Index of golden grahams and its 74 pretty high i wonder what the rice crispies would be. Dextose is 100 so i rice crispies would prob be around 85

I would check the back of that pop tart....Not sure where your located, but I have yet to find one where HFCS was not in the top 3 of ingredients listedHFCS= non optimal insulin secretion :-[

HFCS may be less the optimal for insulin, but remember, it's the same thing as sugar.When used in stuff like poptarts, the "crust" of it will also be incredibly starchy and jack insulin up as well.The only time when HFCS and sugar become truly poor at raising insulin is in a liquid form with no other starch ie soda.

that does make sense, but are the recommendations of limiting fructose to a amount during a backload apply? Or has that updated?

Trevor G FullbrightModeratorThey still apply, but just remember that that's still a large amount of sugar or HFCS since they are both right around 50/50 glucose fructose.With a poptart, I'd guess only around half of the carb content is sugar (I haven't had one in years so I'm not totally sure) and only half of the sugar would be fructose.
