FairyKeymasterI've seen a few other people say it, and I'm dreading looking at my card transactions from yesterday(!), it's easy to blow your budget when carb loading. Any ideas for carb loading effectively on a budget? Overcooked rice all the way...?

Are we talking about backloads it self or what exactly?

Carb Nites are fairly inexpensive. Just getting treats once a week isn't all that bad. Go to glutenfreeonashoestring.com I have the cookbook and use her recipes for CN. Really inexpensive and can save what ever is left for next week. Backloads can be expensive you constantly go out and buy the treats and all. Getting white rice and sweet potatoes and chicken for the first part and getting either certain foods in bulk and/or using that website to bake your own foods. Find sales when ever you can as coupons.

On CNS, I easily spend $30 to $40+ on one CN... but, that is only once a week, so I splurge. On CBL, you should follow more of a game plan. I did a month of it, and I stocked-up on crap in bulk (various packaged cookies, nutella, white bread, large vats of ice cream, yellow corn, etc.). If I wanted a little extra, I'd pop out of the apartment for some pizza or some cheap junk.I guess it depends on where you are, too. Being in NYC, everything is accessible for me, but that $h1t adds up in cost.Cory

FairyGuestYep, I'm in London. It's like £2.20 ($3.50) for a big cookie/piece of cake/cupcake, and £6 ($9.50) for a medium Ben & Jerry's tub, on average. There are bigger supermarkets where this stuff is cheaper, but I don't have a car so can't really access it, and I feel bad about doing a big delivery because I'll take up all the fridge/storage space. Anyway, I'll figure it out; thanks for the ideas

I can sympathize. When I spent some time in England, I was shocked by how cheap $h1t was for me in America (aside from housing), by comparison. Much in the same as when I lived in Australia for a while.Maybe, it is simply cheaper for you to by bulk raws and cook / bake for your backloads. That said, always keep an eye out for offers, etc. When they run offers, grab a lot!Cory

Cory McCarthyMember…oh, and I begin backloads with Turkish Delights, often! Usually just the flavored jellies (not the chocolate-covered variety).I know you got those in England, and possibly in bulk? I was formally introduced to them in Australia (Cadbury / Fry's), and now, I have to get them in f--king specialty import stores, or Turkish restaurants. If you like those, they work well. I am outright addicted to them.

FairyGuestYeah, think I might have to take up baking in any case
much healthier! I have a serious dislike for 'vegetable' oil, which seems to be in almost everything. On a brighter note, I got hold of some AMAZING grass fed butter and I totally get what everyone's raving about now.

FairyGuestOkay, I realised that the reason my carb night was adding up to so much is because –surprise surprise – I was shopping at Wholefoods…Yep. I should have clocked that earlier. I can be a bit slow sometimes! So, I just went to the cheapest store in my neighbourhood (used to turn my nose up at it!) and spent £25 on more junk food than a class of school children could get through at a party (I almost bought a birthday cake too, but didn't have any more room in my basket – next time!). And at Indian and Lebanese stores they have all sorts of pastries and sweets etc. that I want to try; and the great thing is that all of this stuff has so much sugar in it that it keeps forever.

tlfoxyMemberJust move to Vegas… You can find buffets around town for 6 bucks. The cost of living is cheap (no state tax). But, unemployment sucks… ahhh nevermind! you are probably better staying where you're at. But, + 1 on rice. I too have a a 20 lb. bag sitting in my pantry. We also get creative. We have a sort of potluck at our place from time to time. So, everyone brings a dish and leftovers tend to end up in our 'fridge.

You have Whole Foods Markets in Britain? Wow, it is going international... and it started small in my home state here in the US, too.Anyhow, buy cheap, but watch the ingredients for sh1t that is just unhealthy / chemical -- artificials, preservatives, etc. A lot of processed crap is just bad for your health, and we eat a LOT of 'unhealthy' sh1t on these diets as it is.
That is why I go Whole Foods Market... b/c it saves me from baking / cooking for my backloads, b/c I can trust the ingredients due to store policies.Cory
