case terrebonneParticipantI plan on not touching any artificial sweetners for a week or two because it seems like splenda was messing with me. Is there any viable alternative? Stevia?

CBachelor17MemberNo sweetener is probably the best option. But stevia is alright if you must.

janet phiferParticipantI gave sweeteners up about 3 months ago. What I find now is that my taste buds are very sensitive to them. Now, if I try to add them, they really taste bad. I couldn't do without them before, or so I thought. I can't say that unsweetened tea or coffee tastes great, but I can't stand the taste of sweeteners any longer. Here is an interesting n=1 study on the effects of artificial sweeteners on ketone levels: http://www.dietdoctor.com/is-pepsi-max-bad-for-your-weight

makes sense to me, if it is causing a insulin release and I am taking in some carbs with that and then it's lowering my fat burning ability I can see why the hell I plataued. I am already 2 days ahead in weight loss than last week.

cloudybrainParticipantThere are no studies that support sucralose of causing an insulin spike. There are a lot of sweeteners do this, but sucralose is not one of them. Some sugar alcohols are also guilty of this like Xylitol, Sorbitol, and Maltitol. However, Erythritol is safe. You can cut the whole thing out all together if you want.. always include a margin of possibilities when trying things out.

RonokMemberIf you can find some high-quality stevia or sucralose without dextrose additives, you'll be good to go.

If it isn't causing an insulin spike it is definitely causing some type of negative weight loss effect. after about 5 weeks of no weight loss, the only thing I do is cut out all sucralose and bam all of a sudden I am losing weight again. This is either the biggest coincidence in the world or sucralose sucks for me. Keep in mind I eat the same thing everyday and my carb nights are all the same. I'm 244 this morning and previous 6 weeks Thursdays I would be about 2 pounds heavier.I am insulin resistant/type II and on 250mg of metformin once nightly. That might have something to do with the sucralose causing my weight not to move.

Sharon WParticipantThe dietdoctor post on low calorie soda affecting ketosis would explain the sweetener stalling losses. http://www.dietdoctor.com/is-pepsi-max-bad-for-your-weight

Peter HuntParticipantWell, Pepsi Max can't really be compared to Sucralose. http://www.whydontyoutrythis.com/2013/09/what-happens-to-our-body-after-drinking-coca-cola.html?m=1And here's Kiefer's take on the artificial sweeteners argument: http://athlete.io/5830/as-seen-on-twitter-diet-sodas-make-you-fat/

My point was that while the pepsi max didn't affect glucose, it did affect ketosis. So unless someone has tested that, I would wonder if sucralose can somehow have an effect on weight loss by stalling fat burning. Just a thought...

CBachelor17MemberThis is just more reason I have to ask why anyone would use sweetener? On CBL if you want something sweet eat it for dinner, on CNS your never more than 6 1/2 days away. If it could possibly be negatively impacting your health and / or results it's better to just avoid it. That's just how I look at things

cloudybrainParticipantMeh I have a sweet tooth. I ingest coffee with the coconut oil.. and I add splenda just for the taste, otherwise I can't stand it. I could tolerate it, but I prefer the taste of drinking something sweet. I could probably cut down in my intake though and see how that responds as well.It is an interesting post nonetheless!

case terrebonneParticipantI know some post have been defending sucralose. Well at the end of the day, that's the only thing I removed and it fixed my plateau YMMV

janet phiferParticipantAnd, THAT's all that matters…
