biggo78MemberHi guys,Could anyone point me to studies or credible articles that support Keifer's comment below?
Don't extend your fasting window past 12 hours ever if you can avoid it, with or without nicotine gum. All the potential benefit you can get from fasting ends within roughly 8 to 10 hours. An extra 2 to 4 hours may not hurt anything, but it's not useful beyond ingesting a ketogenic diet.
I got it from this nicotine http://athlete.io/2521/can-nicotine-safely-burn-fat-and-build-muscle-the-surprising-facts/Thanks!

Trevor G FullbrightModeratorThe issues come from mTOR shutting off around 12 hours without being stimulated. It comes down to your goals.

i haven't really seen a study to confirm this though.. but have seen numerous studies on the hormonal benefits of 16 hour fasts

Most of what I've seen say 14-16 hour fast, which Kiefer actually says to cut it at 12-14 hours, so it still falls in line with it.

yea i remember one of the biojackeds or one of his interviews he talks about it briefly and that he didn't feel the 2 hours would make a huge difference either way

biggo78MemberI think you guys are right with that it depends on goals. If you're density bulking, then you wouldn't really want to “miss out” on growing by going past the 12-hour fasting window when the mTOR pathways shut down. I'm sure there are other hormonal benefits going beyond 12 hours which involve other pathways that I'm not aware of. But thanks for weighing in guys.

Evan PetersonMemberI could've swore in one of Kiefer's comments on the forum that nicotine can keep the mTOR pathway open even after the 12hr mark…I have all the posts I found especially informative and useful copied and pasted in a doc on my computer, I'll check it when I get home.

CCTMemberWhile mTor may be shut down, 14-16, or even 18 hours, is beneficial for fat loss (despite what kiefer said about IF), but if you're bulking or only concerned about muscle/strength, not going beyond 12 hours may be the right road to go down
