Hannes JoubertMemberHi All, trust we are all doing well?I have just finished the book and have, what I think is an interesting question (Nudge, Kiefer / Naomi)I have in the recent past made use of ketogenic diets, as well as a 40 day long water fast (save the flames for later please ;D )My question is with my body in effect being "used" to slipping into a deep ketosis quite easily, what effect will this have on the reorientation period of 10 days?I understand that carb stores must be depleted in order for the body to start producing ketones, but in my case, I should have stores of ketones left, and my body already comfortable with using them as an alternative energy source....would the 10 day period still apply in this case?CheersH

Do the ten days regardless.

Hannes JoubertMemberWhat would you like to know about the water fast? 😉I have also done a 30 day juice fast, which I preferred honestly. It takes a lot of time for the juice fast with the preparation and washing up, whereas the water fast takes no time out of your day. However, I can attest that you do experience extreme cold in your extremeties during an extended water fast, but the clarity of mind, the improved vitality and improved smell and taste (when resuming eating) are mind blowing...I have tried to do water fasts after the 1st experience, but my body refuses to allow me to do it, the cravings are just to powerful after 10 days...A worthwhile experience if your health requires it.Having said that, I MUST now do something like CBL with the intense training to make up for lean mass lost. Currently I am at 110Kg's with 26% BF, 39 years old and 5'10".The problem that I do experience, after two or three weeks of intense exercise I start getting sick, always upper respiritory tract infections. It usually takes me four to five weeks to recover from this, so it's a case of 1 step forward and 2 steps backwards with no real progress ever being made. I also suspect that my central nervous system is fried by this point.I have the right frame I think, wide shoulders, small waist and pick up weight easily, but the above problems mean that I can never get past body weight on my compound lifts...With this, my training age is difficult to ascertain, I have good form, know how to perform all the exercises, have more than enough equipment and prefer free weights as I also prefer compound movements, but can never be consistent enough to really make a meaningful, lasting impact on my physique...Age may obviously play a role, but there are older guys out there doing better....Currently I am taking human immunoglobulin once a week for 4 weeks to improve health, along with a multi vit and beneficial pro biotics.I am considering using CNS in order to drop body fat (in part, to support my wife as she will be starting CNS this Monday, for the 1st time) and when I am a bit leaner again to do a DB CBL style...I am in a conundrum...

What exactly about the water fast is appealing? I'm not seeing it. You can get the same food taste benefits from CNS and the same improved cognitive function from creatine.

Hey quick question... you might know this... do vitamins such as daily vitamins, calcium, d, ect, spike insulin? When should i take my vitamins? Some have small amounts of fructose in them but i need them for my stomach...Sent from my DROID Pro using Tapatalk 2

Hey there, please don't misunderstand. I am not recommending one over the other...just relating my experiences. Also, the fasts were for different reasons entirely than what I am after now, and also long before I happened upon CBL / CNS.

As far as I know vitamins don't spike insulin. You don't need fructose with your vitamins, you need fat.

Sounds like you are overtraining everytime. This could be both diet as well as training. Were you fasting when experiencing this? Also, maybe elaborate on your training a bit. Overtraining and the accompanied hormonal responses can make it very difficult to lose fat.

Hannes JoubertMemberI was also thinking overtraining and perhaps nutrition was not on point…I was hoping that CBL would help with that part.training wise...Mostly RPT, 6, 8, 10 (increase reps to 8,10,12 before increasing weight)Focus mainly on compound movements to allow me to go heavy, only free weights and body weight, original splits was for 5 days, turned out to be to much, wittled that down to 4 days, also seems to be to much, so now I am aiming for 3 days...I do find that I struggle to keep workout length below 60 mins (including warm up) so perhaps I am trying to do too much.Exercises split across the week would include a few of these (i.e. once a week at least for each):DeadliftsSquatsMilitary PressChinsDipsClean & JerkStifflegged deadsBench - StraightBench - declineFlat bench flysbent over rowsLateral raisesSometimes I would throw in some sprints, or just pickup and carry heavy shit.I vary cadence, also vary focus between negative and positive portions of the liftsTo answer the other part of your question, I never exercised whilst fasting, impossible for me...I have often wondered if I just never took in enough calories, but with my bf% is that even possible?? Interestingly, to tie in with your observation, I simply cannot lose weight during exercise to date. The only way I manage to lose weight is by straight up dieting...If I exercise, I pick up weight, end of story...Thoughts?

I think you should run straight CNS for 6-12 weeks and re-assess

Hannes JoubertMemberHey Doc, thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.May I ask why you suggest that? Any specific reasons?ThanksH
August 13, 2012 at 7:02 pm #72087
Dr. Rocky PatelParticipantDue to your BF%. If you are running at 26%, CNS will help you lose fat and correct any underlying metabolic issues, plus, prime your self for CBL to put on some muscle, IMHO

Brandon D ChristParticipantA 40 day water fast? Oh my god.
