Craig MurphyParticipantHey Folks. So, I'm 22 days into my changing the way I think about food, I've lost 14 pounds and 3.5 inches off my waist already, I'm never hungry and I'm loving every part of the CNS. (I wouldn't mind pooping a bit more than I do but I'm guessing that the lack of carbs lol.) I've been testing with ketostix and have been in ketosis every time I've checked (my carbs are around 20g per day.) I've just bought a blood glucometer that also checks ketones so I'm going to give that a good too. (glucomen? sp) It was only £12.00Anyways, I wasn't following the CNS to start with but was calorie restricting whilst still eating complex carbs etc. but tomorrow is my first carbnite. As it's my first one I'm thinking of starting @ 1600hrs with some Krispy Kreme Donuts, having Fish & Chips with friends around 2100hrs and some chocolate digestive biscuits at 1830hrs.(I'm a brit and I love fish and chips. Sorry! :o)I realise that it's not all about eating rubbish every carbnite but it is about eating carbs that will spike my insulin and I'm guessing these will?Any thoughts? I'd read Kiefer said it's best to have your carbnite of about 6 hours and to ensure it's fast acting carbs, not brown rice etc. Thanks in advance everyone.(BTW My starting stats are:41 Years old.17 Stone (That's 238lbs in new money or 108.2kgs :o)My scales said I was 37.8% bf but I really don't see it.Chest was 48Waist 45.5Neck 16.5I'm now:41 Years old. :o)16 Stone (That's 224lbs in new money or 101.8kgs :o)My scales say I am now 33.6%Chest is 46Waist 42.5Neck 15.75These are in inches.

Craig MurphyParticipantBTW my 'normal' eating is bulletproof coffee in the morning. curry type of lunchmeat / spinach type dinnernuts to snack if neededI'm getting around 65% fat 25grams carbs and the rest is protein.

Ketostix are not advised. They are worthless. Excreting ketones in urine, in no way measures your level of ketosis. In fact, well adapted people won't excrete ketones, they will be burning them as fuel.I am also not saying being in ketosis at a higher level even matters. Blood ketones are the accurate measurement. The meter can be had for free, but the keto sticks for blood ketones are $2-3 per stick.I average .2mm the morning after Carb Nite, slowing rising to 1.5mm by the next Carb Nite. I hit 2.2mm one morning after mild exercise in the previous evening..

Your results sound fantastic. Calories and ratios seem good. Shoot for 65% or more fat so your never in the 50% range with fat. I am having good results with 70% fat or more and usually 15 net grams of carbs or less.

Craig MurphyParticipantHey and thanks very much for your reply.I've bought a 'GlucoMen LX Plus glucometer which does ketones as well as blood glucose and I've just tested my ketones and blood glucose.Ketones were 3.2Glucose 4.9So I'm pretty much just over what I've read is the 'optimum level for fat burning. :o)I've got to admit, eating low carb for me is so easy I'm suspicious I'm one of these insulin sensitive types. I put on weight like anything, I'm built like a tank (played rugby in the RAF) but if I'm not eating low carb I have to watch everything I eat or I put on fat.The odd thing is that I've bought a fitbit and got a heart rate meter which connects to endomondo and what with doing at least 10 thousand steps a day (I've done 19k today but some of that was some running on the treadmill :o) myfitnesspal tells me I can eat and extra 1500 calories today and still lose weight!I'm eating between 1500 & 2000 calories a day depending on if I'm going to the gym or not and to be honest I'm not used to eating so much, being fat adapted and having that bulletproof coffee in the morning means I've rarely felt hungry, I've always got some nuts in my bag and I love green veggies with butter so it's been a really good experience for me so far.I will finally confess I've done this far too many times now. I lose 3 or 4 stone (I was almost 20 stone once), get down to a weight I feel great at (usually by starving myself) and then I relapse on continually crap food. What can I say , who doesn't love crunchy nut cornflakes?! :o) I struggle with portion control and I'm always hungry when I'm not on low carb.Anyway, I'm really looking forwards to my carbnite tomorrow. I'm not desperate for it, I'd quite happily carry on as I am doing but it's nice to know they come around so if I am missing a pizza I can have it. :o)

3.2mm is fantastic. 1.5 to 3.5 is thought to be the sweet spot by those who deal in keto research. Exercise, MCT, coconut oils will also raise ketone levels.

Craig MurphyParticipantHey. Thanks again for the reply. I do take MCT (coconut oil) in my morning coffee and I'd been to the gym yesterday so maybe that's why it was so good.In any case I had my first carbnite today, 3 krispy kremes, some biscuits / cake and fish and chips spread out from 1600hrs to 2130hrs.To be honest I was fine not having one but the book says it kicks off the fat burning process again. Next one is next Saturday as I'm going out for something to eat with a friend. I'd like to find some 'cleaner' stuff to spike my insulin with to be honest. I'm not complaining but it just feels wrong to have cleaned up my diet so much eating fresh meats / veggies / nuts to 'relapse' on refined sugary carbs etc. but then again I'm no doctor so I'm going with the book for the minute.I'm also not going near a scale until next week!Nite! 🙂

Yes, it is interesting how I crave almost nothing during the week and then eating the high glycemic carbs, is not a huge thrill. Just make sure to kick it off with high glycemic, low fat items.I do high glycemic - 2 hour later dinner with carbs - 2 hours later high glycemic carbs. Unsure if the later evening is good or bad overall.

Craig MurphyParticipantSo it's a week since my first carbnite. I jumped on the scales a few times and was quite concerned at what I thought was the weight rebound, I put on 7 pounds lol. That said I'm 2 pounds lighter than I was last week now even after my carbnite so I'm really impressed.I'm having my second carbnite tomorrow, I'm going walking across the Seven Sisters which is a hard 4 hours hiking right by the south coast. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Sisters,_Sussex I think I'll really enjoy having some riccicles and skimmed milk when up there! 🙂

Hi, I know I'm late to this party, but does anyone remember a source that Kiefer references to prove keto sticks are useless? My bf doesn't believe me...
