Tiago NicolauParticipantHave anyone seen this article on Flex?http://www.flexonline.com/training/news/7-classic-exercises-you-should-avoidI personally never see Flex, never had the curiosity and im not a fan of BB magazines since they are full of bullpoo. but i came across this article and i would like to hear some opinions,Most of the exercises that guy talks about only do damage when done improperlly but the straith bar does put some strain on the elbows,Besides of that, i dont really agree on the guy about anything else

TCBParticipantStupid. As you said, most of those things are potentially dangerous if they're done with shitty form. Unfortunately most things on that list, people don't take the time to learn how to do them properly. His only valid point is the straight bar on curls. Though I find that it puts pressure at my wrists, not my elbows. But it doesn't matter cuz then he goes on to say that most of the time skullcrushers are done with a straight bar. I've almost NEVER seen anyone do skullcrushers with a straight bar. It's always a DB or the EZ bar.

Gl;itch.eMemberWell since he's talking from a pure bodybuilding standpoint I think I can agree with a lot of that. Obviously if you are powerlifting for instance you kinda have to bench, dead and squat. And if you are concerned about strength you better be using heavy free weight compound exercises. But if you just want to build muscle up then I would agree that there are “safer” ways to do it that dont necessarily rely on those exercises. The damage of those (and any other) exercises comes in the misapplication of them. Youd be stupid to think you have to do an exercise that you cant perform safely just because its "the king" or anything else is just wussy.

David M PopeParticipant*sigh*I always find these articles interesting. The people condemning the exercises often have much of their career/physique success IN SPITE of doing what they say should be avoided. So the dude had back surgery. So what. That could've easily happend had he been using a smith machine, leg press, whatever.I want to see the person who's never done a squat, bench, dead, bo row, bb curl who has the physique of an elite level BBer. Hell, even a mid-level BBer. I'm guessing there isn't one. Of course, that doesn't mean it CAN'T be done, but it does beg the question of whether other forms can meet the same function with the same given parameters (time, volume, etc.).

I would say that article is for newb trainees and corporate desk-jockeys. People who really just looking for a place to startBehind the neck presses though can fuck you up 10 years down the road... that's no joke. I wouldn't be doing those with heavy weight that's for sure LOL

They aren't for everyone! Kevin Levrone would laugh and say your full of it... as he did them with 405 on the smith machine. just goes to show ya

I agree with Gl;tche. He actually brings up very good points. I think high level bodybuilders get very little out of squats, deads, and bench presses. These exercises are very hard on the body, and if there are other methods to gain muscle, they should use them instead. Remember, bodybuilders focus on size not strength. However, I don't think most of the readers of that article are what I would call a high level bodybuilder.
