Brandon D ChristParticipantThe only essential nutrients that are practically non existant in animal products are vitamin K and C
The vitamin C thing always baffled me. If you know anything about history, Scurvy (a disease from lack of Vitamin C) was rampant amongst sailors during the age of exploration. All these guys ate were cured meat and fish. Kiefer has said a few times that are ancestors were at one point eating no vegetable matter. While organ meats do contain a little bit of vitamin C, was Scurvy rampant amongst these people too, or it there some other factor at play?

BenjaminDMemberIf I could please get some clarification on this…Are we suggesting that fruits and vegetables are unnecessary because their "healthy" properties can be derived from other products like meats, multivitamins, regular exercise, etc. and that they are not really nutritious because they basically just add sugar (or fiber, I suppose) to our diets?I'm not a staunch paleoist (I'm about 90% good) but I try to eat paleo because it helps me to narrow down and make better food choices. I also feel that eating whole food just generally tastes and works better. I'd rather make my own food and know I'm using quality products than outsource and eat fast food (i.e. make my own burgers or baked goods).

Fruits and veg are unnecessary because high quality animal products supply enough nutrition to be healthy. (multivitamins are worthless and you can't eat exercise.) Like I said above... doesn't mean you shouldn't eat em, just don't count on them to save the day because they won't. I really don't eat many fruits or veggies but if someone puts a salad in front of me, I'll usually eat it (assuming it is accompanied by a steak or some other animal flesh). Why do you think multivitamins are worthless? Does anyone else share these same sentiments? Also, I disagree that you can't eat exercise.

Multi vitamins are worthless because they typically use forms of the vitamins that are not very bio available and the contain vitamins and minerals that are antagonist of each other in regards to absorption (ie zinc and calcium). The result is very poor absorption of the nutrients.

Worse than that. Some forms (cyanocobalimin and a commonly used form of methionine come to mind) are downright toxic. -Adam

Fair enough. Multis have typically been a supplement I purchase because they are inexpensive and always seemed like something that would compliment my diet.

I hear you, I used to use them up until recently. The way I look at it, the little bit of money I spent on them I can now use to upgrade the quality of my food.

Sure an individual supplement like magnesium or vitamin D and fish oil can be great, but if you're eating well, taking cheap multis 'as insurance' is as best throwing away money and at worst potentially doing harm. I'd rather stock up on good beef or extra fish oil.

Butter is a great source of K2.
Huh... So if one follows the typical ULC diet whether during CBL pre-WO or on CNS, should Vit C be considered as a possible supplement? I take a general multi-vit, but I can't remember how much C is in it.

If you're eating a little bit of vegetables, vitamin C won't be a problem.

I don't know to think of the RDI for vitamins. Personally I always thought they were too low for a lot of things. They might be too high for others I guess. Fiber is overrated, however when I went super low fiber for a week (3 g of fiber per day) during the detox, I had a VERY bad experience. I am still trying to recover from that.

Fruit in itself is not uniquely vitamin rich. And I would think that a healthy gut just doesn't need large amounts of fiber to digest meats. In any case Backloads with some potatoes should have you covered. As for RDI, I also don't know what to think, but a nutrient dense diet (like the detox diet) should cover all bases. I also try to eat liver every week and some shellfish along with oily fish. Liver will dominate any and all foods for nutrient density.I make my own pickles and sauerkraut for cheap ass tasty probiotics (vitamin c too i think). (salt+garlic+cucumber+3days room temp=pickles)RDA and 4oz liver:http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/lamb-veal-and-game-products/4668/2
