Hello everyone!!! I would like to share with you my experience with Carbs Back Loading (CBL) the last 3 months. I am trying to follow it, eating no carbs till 16:00 when I go for training and then doing CBL. I have my post-training shake plus 3 bananas or 2 big spoons of honey, I have a large plate of pasta or rice with chicken or beef 1 hour after that and another fast carbs meal 2-3 hours after that. However, I have the following problem when I do that. I get a feeling of nausea, I sweat, I feel sick, and stressed and I loose my biological rhythm and I cannot sleep. So, I decided to stop with CBL for now. Has anyone else the same experience? Why is this happening? Any suggestions?

This feeling is kinda normal, some folks get it, some don’t. I remember getting this when I first started, every once in a while I will still have night sweats, and have some trouble sleeping. It could depend on what you’re eating right before bed.

What do you suggest as a solution? Do you know why this is happening? How often do you get sleep troubles? Does not that bother you?

Again it is depending on what you’re eating before bed, I typically try to pair some fats with the high glycemic carbs, not much but some. No it doesn’t because my metabolism is just going into overdrive, and burning what I ate.

Sorry, one last question… why do you pair fats with high GI carbs? Does it help lower the GI?

Having trouble sleeping might be happening if you’re insulin sensitive – the carbs are doing what they’re supposed to do, giving you energy.
However, feeling of nausea and sickness doesn’t seem normal to me, and I always take those things as your body saying, “Hey, whatever you’re doing, we don’t like it,” so you might want to change your set up. For example, just have the shake, then pasta/rice dinner, and take out the last meal or just eat protein/fats or something.

Thank you yre674 for your help. I agree with you – I will listen to my body. I do not understand however yur explanation about my sleeping troubles. Why would a high insulin sensitivity cause me sleeping troubles?

It’s just a possibility, but people with good insulin sensitivity will have no problem clearing the sugar in the bloodstream and using it for energy. I’m not saying it’s causing your feeling of nausea or sickness, but I’m just saying sometimes that energy can make people restless.

A while back, I’d backload twice a week. Those two nights, without fail, I had a hard time falling asleep because I had SO much energy. Not sure if I’m actually sensitive to insulin, but I don’t think I’m too terribly resistant either. However, I’ve never had the supposed “carb coma” either, and I also have no carb crash/cravings going for an extended period of time without carbs, so I might just be a weirdo.

Thank you again for your valuable info! You gave me some food for thought! I will also try to do CBL only on some training days and not every day and I will also try to adjust it on my body’s needs. I have recently done a glucose tolerance test and it is very normal! I am trying to understand why this is happening to me but it is still not clear. Maybe it has to do with the fact that my body is not used in this high amount of glucose after 18:00 – I am 35 and I always had a diet with the majority of my carbs till 18:00. Maybe it is a big change for my body! I am also trying to read and understand this article here, which gives some explanation to my “problem”: http://caloriesproper.com/carb-back-loading-and-the-circadian-regulation-of-metabolism/
