John LaPlaca JrMemberHello everyone,After listening to the CBL video he recently put out one of the points he made when people get fat is because they are following too much of a Paleo approach. I assume he means eating too much fruit during the backloads? As he suggests rice and sweet potatoes himself often. Has anyone backloaded with pizza and baked goods on a regular basis and seen great results? I limit those carbs to once or twice a week at most and it made me think that maybe I should start making the last two meals as trashy as he suggests. Any input appreciated.

Richard SchmittModeratorPlenty of folks do. I personally have dirty meals but then again “dirty” in the mind of Paleo, is not having any type of grains or stuff we typically use. Mostly using fructose like the copious amount of fruits and sweet potatoes. Now SP and fruits in small amounts is fine, again small amounts, you need high glycemic foods. Using Leucine and whey can help with certain meals in question. I do sushi rice or white potatoes as a first meal then I tend to have cereal and/or pancakes with a spiking insulin shake. Last meal contains a dessert I make, again with a spiking insulin shake as well.

I tend to use your approach as well. If I do have sweet potatoes its no more than 2-3 smaller ones(450grams in total) and I usually put maple syrup or grass fed butter if its the last meal of the evening.Yesterday for instance I went to Lone Star steak house and had...8oz steak1 baked potatoe1 sweet potatoe(with brown sugar)2 scoops of Nutrex muscle infusionCereal mix of rice chex, rice krispies, and fruitty pebbles with a TBSP of coconut butter.

Good advice, like the idea of slipping the shake in with some dextrose I assume

Dextrose is becoming unbearable to me. I use it because I know its good for the program to work but the taste is just awful imo.

GnomerParticipanti don't eat most grains or dairy so makes it hard to have a “dirty” backloads. Thing is if you are going just for the high insulin spike jasmine rice is about as good as it gets with a GI of about 109 while table sugar sits around 60 and wheat is around 70 and actually has a bigger response than sugar.. but overall not much out there is delicious and gives you a big spike like jasmine rice.. sushi rice is also good with GI around 100.. imho the whole eat cake, pizza and ice cream is to sell books. If he went around telling everyone to eat rice and potatoes he would not sell even a fraction of what he can sell saying to backload with cherry turnovers

Richard SchmittModeratorSee I use dextrose but in large amounts I cannot tolerate it. The sweetness is okay but my stomach issues say nay. I use 2 tablespoons with almond or coconut milk in cereal to bring up the flavor. I use dextrose in baking or certain recipes but not a lot.

One day like an idiot I decided to have over 100 grams after a leg workout and it ripped apart my stomach for nearly an hour. I don't know if that put a bad impression in my body or what but when I use 2 scoops I want to slam it because I don't like it but at the same time I don't want to get a stomach ache from it.

I follow it a long these same lines as well for the most part. Only dairy I consume is grass fed butter and the occasional pizza and no grains at all unless theres wheat in the occasional food items I might consume.

i really see no point in using dextrose at all.. but i also try to avoid highly processed foods anyway..

Richard SchmittModeratorBecause there is a difference in the glycemic/carb load and index/spike. Meaning a difference in 200g in dextrose and 200g in whole foods. So to feel a bit comfortable on both counts, going half with whole foods and powder.

me personally would rather just eat more rice:) dextrose does horrible things to my stomach above 30g and is chemically derived from corn so no surprise it messes with many peoples digestives systems

My wife makes sticky rice which is completely awesome therefore great for the evening meals for spikingUnfortunately not so convenient for PWO shake.I remember supplementing with 100g dextrose when creatine was really popular about 10yrs ago - proclaimed as necessary to shuttle the creatine into the muscle cells at the time. For someone who doesn't have a sweet tooth it was horrific at best.
