Richard SchmittModeratorSo I was looking up good watches/devices that track heart rates, and how much calories you burn during a workout. Always been curious about this, because I never really knew how much I was burning during my cardio sessions, and when lifting. Does anyone know the better brands of these devices? Don't want to spend money on something that won't work, not recommended, or a waste.

sckielyParticipantSuunto, seems like a good brand here in Australia, as well as Polar? But basically you get what you pay for.

Richard SchmittModeratorAlright I'll be checking those out. Thank you.

Naomi MostMemberI don't have a comprehensive knowledge of the sensor market, but I think the best you can probably do right now on the consumer market is the BodyBugg, which measures body heat fluctuations (possibly also moisture, I'm not sure). There are some really interesting experimental ones on the way though... one of them being developed by a friend of mine here in SF.

Have you used your friend's product? or Is it still in production?

Damon AmatoParticipantbodybugg and bodymedia are both pretty good products. Expensive though.

Still in production. I missed out on the alpha-testing run back in September, just got too busy and didn't submit an application. I regret that!

NewfiedanParticipantI have a bodymedia currently which I do love and had used a polar f4 prior to that, it is still in my cupboard lol. If you want to save a few bucks get one off of ebay that has been used and has a new strap. I got my bodymedia off ebay for about 60 bucks cheaper than a new one you just need to pay the 7 bucks a month if you want the fancy graphs and what not off the site. If you do not want those then you can get free software to get the raw data off of it the link to it is on facebook the group is called freethebugg I think. I have the link for it somewhere but I like the data and graphing features of the site so I pay the 7 bucks a month for it.

Richard SchmittModeratorI was looking at both bodybugg and bodymedia websites, counting calories, and seeing what your actually burning is cool and all but with doing CBL, I'm really wanting to if I'm using fats in a certain way and also carbs. That (in a way) using those to burn throughout the day too. To calculate those grams along with calories. I would wear something like this for the timeframe of my workouts or when doing cardio. Naomi, oh geez well don't regret it, just made a mistake by not taking advantage of it. Stuff happens. Newfiedan, I'll have to check all that out. It'll be cool to have when I get home to accurately get readings on certain situations. I wouldn't mind paying the $7 a month for it, BUT we also have to consider that DH has some software for CBL/CN in production >=D I'm wondering if that watch could work with something like that, to help keep track. So many possibilites...so little time haha

NewfiedanParticipantJust keep in mind that the good ones usually have a chest strap but the sportline ones that you just wear like a watch are not to bad. If you opt for a polar try to get the one that has the small clip on it, the band with the wide plastic one is annoying when you are doing weight workouts and it had a tendency to slide down my chest when I was doing pullups or dips.

Alright good sir, I appreciate the tip, and help! I'm probably going to get one. Just have to weigh those options, since the better ones are chest-strapped.

Richard SchmittModeratorSo was looking into some these watches, (yes I know this forum is old), buuuut I'm torn between two of them!! One is the Sportline DUO 1010 Heart Rate Monitor, and the Polar F6 Heart Rate Monitor…there's also that Polar FT60 Heart Rate Monitor. Opinions on these?
February 20, 2012 at 1:06 pm #30619
Damon AmatoParticipantI think Polar is the more advanced company with regard to HR monitors, but it all comes down to ease of use, accuracy, and comfortability.
February 20, 2012 at 4:27 pm #30620
NewfiedanParticipantThey are both good brands tex, I have had a sportline and the polar, just keep in mind that most accurate one will have a chest strap, the newer polar chest straps with the clip on sensor are pretty comfortable the older ones not so much, my sportline one was just the watch and readings compared to the polar varied by as much as 30% for cal burn.

RaegtenGuestJust an idea: if you're ever going to run outside and are not just interested in monitoring your hr/cals the forerunner series by garmin might be worth checking out, they include full gps functionality. I used to run trails and got the forerunner 305 to track hr, distance/height covered, etc. – so if you're data freak like me, these things are awesome 😉
