Bob HaganParticipantI have a tub of BCAAs that have have in one serving3000 mg Leucine 1000 mg Isoleucine and 1000mg Valine(label attached). I have read that itis better to have pure Leucine but I would like to use this up. Does the Isoleucine part cout towards the 5 gms of PWO dose? I am thinking 1 & 1/2 servings to be a good estimate but just don't know. Thanks

freshsbGuestMate I could be wrong on this, but from what I know each of them have different metabolic pathways and are thus metabolised differently. So I would take that to mean, don't count the Isoleucine content towards the Leucine load you're trying to get

Richard SchmittModeratorYes sir, I just recently ordered some from True Nutrition. Serious Nutrition Solutions sells L-Leucine from dpsnutrition.net as well, I bought some from them a while back. I used to get PrimaForce but…can't seem to find it anymore.

tzanghiParticipantThere's some disagreement as the the value of BCAAs vs. just leucine. I don't think BCAAs are worthless, but leucine is clearly the most important. Definitely use the BCAAs, just make sure you're getting enough leucine in each dosage. To be honest, now that I look, that blend isn't really that good, though. Missing Beta Alanine, which is another solid BCAA.

ReisParticipantI have the same issue with a 12-oz tub of BCAAs from Vitamin Shoppe. Each scoop is 2.5 grams of L-leucine in my case, so I put 2 scoops of powder into about 20 veggie capsules and take them as pills. This stuff tastes like death's asshole, so I can't bear to get it down any other way…reduces the frequency that I actually take it, but at least I'm getting it down. Can't wait til I'm done with this tub…will explore other brands when the time comes.

Beta Alanine is not a BCAA. There are only three BCAAs: leucine, isoleucine, and valine.I think leucine plus hydrolysates are better than BCAAs for any given application.

I use BCAAs. Just use two servings, that'd give you the proper Leucine dose (in your case, 6g Leucine).Cory

What is the disagreement? I'm not trying to be a jackass I am genuinely curious. I think BCAAs would be better than just leucine, but I think leucine and a hydrolyzed protein would be the best because you are getting the anabolic properties from leucine and all the amino acids from the hydrolyzed protein.

For one, Isoleucine also raises insulin, and comes more broken down than even the hydrolysates; I would venture to guess it raises insulin more quickly and sharply due to the break down, but I don't know to be honest. I have heard Robb Wolf say isoleucine raises insulin. Also, from what I've read, BCAAs can be used as substrate to form different aminos as your body needs them. Hydrolysates, on the other hand, provide a complete protein source, so in theory, the body should just break them down and then rebuild tissue with the broken down aminos. The difference is probably not that much, and it probably doesn't matter if you eat enough protein, but I don't think Kiefer is fair towards BCAAs from other things I've read and heard.As a side note, from what I've heard, Beta Alanine also can be used as substrate a la the BCAAs other than leucine; this might have been where I got it mixed up as a BCAA. Either way, I was wrong.

MJCMemberI usually take 10g BCAA post workout then have my shake with carbs25-30 min later. Learned this from George Farah and Charles Poloquin. Sure it doesn't make a huge difference but its easier just to keep the bcaa in my gym bag and drink the shake when im calmed down from the workout. Also you get the “pulse” effect doing this.
