bakare47ParticipantHi Everyone,I have a question regarding a group of people that seem to have success in leaning out, when it would seem that they're going against the available research (as in low carbohydrate for fat loss)The Vegans / Fruitarians. People who eat just fruit for instance (like bananas). They preach a high carbohydrate, low fat, natural diet. It's completely the opposite of say CNS.My question, one that puzzles me, is this:How on earth do these people get lean when they're seemingly doing the opposite of what they should be doing?thanks

GnomerParticipantmost fruit and almost all vegetables have little effect on insulin. Fruit generally comes with a good amount of fiber and doesn't bring insulin up much. So even if you are insulin resistant you could lose weight sticking to a diet of fruits and vegetables. But also it isn't always all about insulin as there are other factors that go into losing body weight which is why pretty much any diet will work for some and not for others.. things like genetics, hormones, metabolism, thyroid issues, medications and other factors all can go into weight loss or weight gain

GonnaBeGiantMemberAlso, off what Sano said. They are losing “body weight.” CNS and even CBL (SA) is to lose or “destroy” body fat. Losing “weight” is a mixture of muscle and fat and I'm not 100% sure but, I believe you lose a lot more muscle on those type of “low fat” diets than you do fat. As long as you're in a calorie deficit you'll lose “weight” regardless of it's from bananas or donuts.

Losing "weight" is a mixture of muscle and fat and I'm not 100% sure but, I believe you lose a lot more muscle on those type of "low fat" diets than you do fat. As long as you're in a calorie deficit you'll lose "weight" regardless of it's from bananas or donuts.
unless you have metabolic or hormonal or glandular issues or take certain medications you could be eating pretty much nothing and still not lose any body weight.. problem is majority of people who have been dieting or doing heavy caloric restriction for a long time probably have a combination of those issues

MagParticipantThe entire idea behind CBL and CN,is enable a person to continue fat loss and muscle gain over the long term(months and years),as opposed to drastic short term weight loss,followed by stalled progress and a rebound of weight/fat gain.Vegan is a great path if your goal is lean/skinny(little or no muscle mass).If exercise plays any role in your plan,then you should also be interested in adding muscle mass.

TCBParticipantFor the most part, I wouldn't really call them lean.. Just like I wouldn't really call endurance athletes lean.Gwyneth Paltrow may be 5'10, and weigh 97lbs or something, but she isn't lean.. she's just skinny, and probably has a bodyfat percentage of 20+.

True I was talking a majority of people.
unfortunately as years go by i'd say the majority is closer and closer to the side of having one or more of these issues than not.

Nadya TopalovaivanParticipantMany factors are to be considered. Health, hormones, way of life aka diet, genes, etc. Can't judge a rule by its exceptions. I know it can be frustrating sometimes. I know people who eat half a bread for breakfast everyday and are leaner than me.Just an example I stumbled upon just yesterday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPTniEYdetY the 78 yo vegan bodybuilder. These things piss me right off, especially when you try to explain to somebody why being vegetarian/vegan is suboptimal for homo-sapiens.

MagParticipantIts great to see Jim Morris still in great shape,78 years old…wow!First thing that comes to mind is that the man built a massive physique years ago,on a typical high protein,meat diet( and probably some pharmaceutical thrown in),so to say that veganism built his physique is misleading.

PhattyMemberAs the saying goes, “There's more than one way to skin a cat”.A plain old caloric restriction works for many people, as do low fat diets (Kiefer has touched on this too).It might not be the healthiest, best or most optimal but it can still work, for some.
