AdamFiddlerKeymasterMostly just asking about it as a sleep aid. Any benefit in terms of recovery would be a bonus.

MikehrMemberI wouldn't say it puts me to sleep in anyway but once I get to sleep its much more restful with ZMA and Gaba both of which I take all year round

Trevor G FullbrightModeratorI think you are much better off getting the components of it separately. I get nothing sleep wise from it, but natural calm really relaxes me.

Zinc optimizes testosterone levels, and the ZMA combination helps raise IGF-1 (the most anabolic hormone in the body).Cory

performancedaveMemberJust know that ZMA as created by Victor Conte is much different then just buying zinc or magnesium chelate, I've taken those in the past and have no benefits I get from actual ZMA, Im partial to MusclePharms cuz they throw in some melatonin and fenugreek for absorption!

Victor Conte's a bad motherf*cker, man. Not a lot of people realize how much work he did that before Bonds, Tim Montgomery, etc.Fascinating 3-hour long interview with him on the JRE for anybody who's interested. @ performancedave: The ZMA I would get would be from Nutrabio, a company which sells purely pharmaceutical grade supplements with no filler. (No affiliation)@ Cory: Those statements seems painfully vague to be honest, especially use of the word "optimizes".@ Trevor: I guess you could say that about all supplements, but do you mean introduce that for purposes of introducing them one at a time?-AF

I'd have to dig up the studies. They are what got me on ZMAs like 3 years ago, so I don't even know where I read them. Possibly FLEX?Some mention of it here:http://www.exrx.net/Nutrition/Supplements/ZMA.htmlCory

JakeMemberI've taken ZMA for periods of a couple months a few times; however, I never noticed a difference in anything from taking it. I think it's a waste of money personally.http://www.ergo-log.com/zma.html

performancedaveMemberYeah the JRE Podcast is fascinating, and it actually turned me on to things I didnt even know about ZMA although I was already supplementing with it, & he recommended the musclepharm one in addition to his own. JV Its not generally something you will feel, but since almost everyone is deficient in Magnesium, and males should really think about supplementing with zinc and these forms are the most bio-available.

FairyGuestDave Asprey says you're better off mega dosing with zinc/magnesium/POTASSIUM as sold individually.

BenjaminDMemberI've tried 3 or 4 different products and MusclePharm's ZMA is without a doubt the best I've ever used. I could care less about what studies show because this particular product gets me deep, uninterrupted sleep and that's all I need to know about ZMA.

Cory McCarthyMemberI've said it before (and posted study links), but the ZMAs are ESSENTIAL for active people. You deplete quite easily. That said, it has been shown to raise IGF-1 levels (the most anabolic hormone in body, produced in the liver), and boost free testosterone. Therefore, it will also ignite muscle growth, boost fat loss and promote recovery. The short answer, ensure you get those minerals in supp.Cory

JakeMemberIf you're trying to save money I recommend buying Natural Calm and a Zinc supplement. Cheaper than ZMA and you'll still be able to take the 450 mg of Mg and 30 mg of Zinc prior to bed. I've just started taking natural calm recently and am very pleased with it.
