WendtbrandonParticipantHey guys I am leaving to Italy next Wednesday and I am staying with a friend. They eat carbs in every single meal and tons of them. The last time I was there I gained 17lbs. I will be gone for ten days and I have just recently gotten down from 20% bf to 14 I do not want to jump back where I was. Can anyone offer me advice on what to do ?? I cannot work out either.

I think you need to suck it up and not eat the food they eat. If they are really your friends, they shouldn't care. How long are you gonna be there?

WendtbrandonParticipantI will limit the food I eat and skip breakfast but there is nothing to truly eat besides pasta and sandwiches. I am going to be there for 10 days and it sucks. I cannot afford to eat healthy over there the steak is almost 15 dollars a pound.

I feel sorry for you. I would go insane if I had to live off pasta.

Richard SchmittModeratorLady Gaga did wonders with pasta! Just learn control and that won't happen.

Eric ShawMemberI say stop being neurotic about eating carbs and enjoy your vacation. I will only speak for my self here, and say if it were me in your shoes here is how I would approach it. I would do intermittant fasting for 16 hours, e.g. last meal at 10pm or Midnight, then don't eat next meal until 14-16 hours later, then during those later meals, enjoy yourself. And yes I know quite well about Kiefers take on IF'ing, just bring some coconut oil with you and add it to your coffee upon waking 1 or 2 tbsp + some cream. I would also suggest bring some protein suppplments like some whey iso or concentrate just in case you feel your are not taking in enough from your later meals. If you feel you will say get only 50-75 grams of protein total from your post fast meals, then make that up with some protein shakes pre-fast break, in the morning and early PM hours. Who cares if the whey spikes insulin, big deal, your goal is not fat loss but to prevent fat gain, so the protein is to fill your protein and calorie needs. Also maybe bring some fish oil caps to help ad some healthy fats during your fasting period, and even some MCT oil that you could add to your protein shakes, a 1tbsp or so. Here is what I would not worry about, spiking insulin with cream in your coffee or by consumption of a protein shake etc, or from eating pasta or pizza for crying out loud, it's a vacation, too much orthorexia on the net these days.I think people tend to develop a bit of neurotic thinking about getting fat eating carbs when they lose weight or about being afraid to even use the half-n-half in the coffee shop when on the go for fear they will spike insulin and die.Personally, I say enjoy your trip, enjoy your carbs, just do the above and I bet you won't gain any weight. I did IF'ing for nearly 3 years before I started CBL, and ate a ton of carbs and din't gain any fat because it was all done at night thus keeping my calories in check, and my fat burning going all day.Bottom line, just treat each day like a carb back load day. But don't go overboard on the fats during the fasting period because you don't want to eat too many calories if you end up pigging out at night. That is something you will have to judge for yourself.

mwachtelParticipantIve never been to Italy, but seriously, are there no dishes that dont come w/ pasta?Honestly, if its a peer pressure thing, or feeling weird about not eating carbs in a place known for them, I would just tell your reasoning. If they dont understand, @#$% them.

Lesli BortzParticipantI would just limit them as much as possible. Don't have large portions…whenever possible eat meats/fats. But you can only do what you can do….so if you can't eliminate carbs then limit what you eat.

preppypyroGuestI know its a bit against the norm, specially in here, but if your stuck eating carbs the whole time and honstly have no other options, what I would do if I were you is calorie count for those ten days. Do your best to keep your calories in vs calories out relatively the same. That way least when you get back, if you step on the scale, you wont totatly bum yourself out. That would be more for the mental progress though I would think. Watch what you eat as best you can, and do the prep phase when you return. I actually love the prep phase the best so far!

IgboMesoMemberI know this feeling I'm about to take a 3 week Christmas Holiday with my parents and Brother. Just do the best you can, don't obsess too much about your food choices. Focus on lean meats and veggies to fill you up.

CropsyMemberI'm with shokat. Do it. Enjoy it. Then come back and turn yourself into a pasta-destroying monster.
