RoaringMad MacMemberOkay my wife is going to start Carb Nite with me after my first Carb Nite so we are on schedule. Most of the stuff she can do but she is not a coffee drinker. It is going to be hard to not have her drink Orange juice in the morning . what is something she can drink or do to get past this. She is borderline diabetic as well so don't know if any of this will make a difference .

Besides water? I don't really know. Tea maybe? If she is borderline diabetic I can't see any benefit from drinking orange juice first thing in the morning. All it's doing is giving her a large insulin spike first thing from when she wakes up. Probably not the best since diabetics should be minimizing large blood sugar spikes. I would try tea, or give coffee a chance, but without Coconut oil to begin with. Also, I cannot recommend that she go on a low carb diet, simply because I don't know what effect it can have on pre-diabetic/diabetics. Maybe kiefer or one of the other global mods could give you an answer on that. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Damon AmatoParticipantPerhaps educating her in the fact that giving orange juice in the morning to a diabetic is like giving a drug addict some ecstasy before going to a rave.

nickl413MemberAs long as she's not already on medication to regulate blood sugar, a low carb diet can only help her condition. Like Zach said, drinking orange juice is a bad idea. And she needs to understand the reasons why if you expect her to be on board with this diet. Otherwise she will likely fail.Coffee, although it has benefits, isn't necessary. The only thing that is necessary is ULTRA LOW CARBS!

RoaringMad MacMemberI should also add that the Orange Juice is low sugar as most of the fruit Juices she drinks now. I want to ween her off all of that stuff anyway. and yes she is on medication

Damon AmatoParticipant“low sugar” fruit juice is still too sugary. What about water with lemon and a few drops of liquid Splenda?

RoaringMad MacMemberthat is a good idea….. I'll try to tell her that.

nickl413Memberyes she is on medication
Then it may be more complicated. Going on a diet that lowers blood sugar while taking medication that also lowers blood sugar could be bad news. There is a doctor here on the DH forums that treats diabetic patients and has many of them on carb night. You may want to send him a pm for advice. here's the link to his profile.http://dangerouslyhardcore.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=372

RoaringMad MacMemberdone He has responded to one of my post already so hopefully he can shed some light on this for me.

Dr. Rocky PatelParticipantI would suggest tea or green tea for breakfast. Also 1 tsp of coconut oil with whatever 0 calorie beverage she likes would work. Then slowly work your way to 1 tbsp of coconut oil.CNS is great for pre diabetics and diabetics, IMHO. It is one of the quickest ways to reduce medication burden or rid yourself of meds. The main concern will be low blood sugar reactions if she is on blood sugar lowering medications. So make sure she monitors her sugar closely, if it drops or she crashes, it may be a reason to stop the medication. Definitely something to work with her medical provider with so there is close monitoring. I would def rec she have a snack with her at all times for the first 1-3 weeks. I usually rec a snack pack size of skittles, just in case. 10 skittles will get sugar up about 25 points. My statements are for entertainment purposes only. Always check/work with your doctor closely

Lesli BortzParticipantI'm horrible but my initial response was to drink it anyway. I never had a cup of coffee until 11 weeks ago when I started CBL. Seems it's very highly recommended so I bit the bullet and have it every morning. I take it like any other supplement. If you can find one that tastes decent (still don't think it tastes good - this probably wont change for me) then it's at least worth a shot. I actually sip it throughout my workout in the morning and it "seems" to give me an extra boost of energy.

Dr. Rocky PatelParticipantFYI, I saw 2 patients in the office today in follow up that are both diabetic (one actually has congestive heart failure). I put them both on CN. They both lost 7 lbs during prep. Both were able to reduce their BP meds by 50% after 1 week. Blood sugars better too! Hope that helps for some encouragement. Tell your wife to stay committed.I am kind of with @Phxplay88, maybe just try choking down the coffee. With butter, coconut oil, cinnamon, and some stevia, it can't be all that bad

So I don't know what anyone else's experience with this is - lots of people seem to understand the chemical reactions better than I do - but I used to work in a coffee shop and I just can't afford the stuff I really like right now - the grocery store stuff tastes like shit (IMO). So I got that MioEnergy stuff? If you haven't seen it, it's by the Crystal Lite in the store. You can put flavor shots in your water. I usually just do a little bit of flavoring - but it has caffeine in it. Some people sweeten it to the point it's like punch... Anyway, it's not orange juice, but it's a little more fruity - I think it tastes good - it's 0 carb, there is no sugar in it and that's all I have for breakfast... I just have flavored water with caffeine, but drink tons of it until noon - then go have a bacon lunch, lol! Does anyone else use MIOEnergy? It hasn't hindered me at all, but again, lots of you all here know more than I do 🙂
