gkeeper24KeymasterAnyone else struggle to get a good nights sleep with CBL? With all the serotonin being released before bed time you would think it would make for a great night of sleep. That hasn't been the case lately. I've pretty wired at bed time and cant fall asleep.

FineSigilMemberYes I've had this as well. It's sort of weird. I often sleep better on low carb rest days (meat/fat meal pre-bed). Although sometimes carbs really take me out. I feel like its dosage specific…if Iforce feed past that initial “satiety” point, my heart beat accelerates and I start feeling wired (almsot like a pre-gym pump). Maybe theres a sweet spot…

Richard SchmittModeratorAh I'm trying to remember that damn pill you can take to help with sleep. I know that there is ZMA, Potassium (I believe), and Melatonin*? Shoot I'd have to find the link on here. Nyquil might help too…*

Mjl1030MemberI took ZMA and melatonin, both never helped. I had hardcore lucid dreams on ZMA's. I sleep just as well without a pill. I have insomnia as well. I went to CNS as keifer said you would get fat on CBL with insomnia.

oshareGuestTry ending your backloads a few hours before bed to make sure that your insulin levels have gone back down. Some people can get away with a big insulin spike before bed and sleep with no problems, others not at all. I have to make sure I'm done eating carbs a good 2-3 hours before bed if I hope to have any amount of quality sleep.

thestiffmeisterParticipantSame here, eating right before bed will keep me up all night without fail. Never much of an issue because I am done in under an hour most of the time, but back-loading during social events in an unstructured fashion never worked well for me. Same goes for mixing booze and large amounts of carbs, no bueno.

gkeeper24GuestI feel like this diet can be hard on the adrenals and could easily be a cause of adrenal fatigue, resulting in poor sleep.Fasting in the morning+coffee+low carb all day+training w/ no carbs+training at night+only using high gi carbs pwo= problems with cortisol and adrenal output.

I am generally fine about falling asleep but I cant stay asleep I wake up after a few hours then toss and turn. I can't stop eating 2-3 hours before bed because I don't train till around 7pm and by the time I shower and drive home its 9 THEN I start eating....

Fredperez76GuestInteresting about the adrenals, I always felt that doing fasts in the morning screwed up my sleep at night.I shortened them to 12 hoursAnother thing you can try is apple cider vinegar, or just vinegar if it's what you have, before bed. This alone improved my sleep quality in a big way.

Richard SchmittModeratorI'll have to try the apple vinegar but I got some NOW melatonin today and going to try it.

thestiffmeisterParticipantWell I think my problem has been resolved lolYesterday I fasted for about 10 hours between lunch and dinner (stuck on a boat going against the wind/current), and by the time I got home I knew I needed to back-load, reach my protein requirements and avoid throwing up, so I opted for soft foods and fell deep asleep exactly 15 minutes after polishing off everything...in 30 minutes or less with very little water. My bed sheets were all over the place this morning, but I slept for more than 9 hours without interruption. Now I need to fix this excessive sweating for a day or two after every back-load. I swear carbs turn me into a heat engine without fail which makes any social event quite awkward. So key points are..food texture matters and maybe it's not such a good idea to just down water.

Fredperez76GuestWhat types of soft foods?
August 2, 2012 at 3:06 am #68429
thestiffmeisterParticipantBox of cinnamon buns, tub of quark + 2 scoops of casein and a half-gallon of ice cream.

CptSmashMemberThe bigger my back loads, the harder time I have sleeping, especially if I'm headed to bed 30minutes prior to eating a large amount of carbs, whether it's the insulin spiking or the thermic effect of food. It's kind of a call out between being able to get enough carbs in and getting your body to settle down long enough to fall asleep. Plus, I think the level of caffeine is sometimes too high .Bump on the melatonin (3mg about 30 minutes prior to bed). GABA (Gamma Amabutyric Acid(sp) works great too. 5-HTP is good too. Some chamomille tea...Maybe cleaning up the carbohydrate sources would help. Looking at getting off this junk food fetish I have with CBL at the moment.
