Trevor G FullbrightModeratorDairy protein is just odd in this way. Leucine aside, it's AA ratio causes a insulin spike where as beef has little to none.I honestly wasn't aware of leucine being lower in cottage cheese, but it will still spike insulin.

PeteMemberCool. So after a workout or in the evening on a rest day cottage cheese it is. I'm familiar with the whole GOMAD concept. Never went for it though… not much of a milk drinker.

PWO it's awesome, and if you are doing DB, then having it at night is good too.

PeteMemberYeah, I would go for DB.One last thing, Trevor. I know that a lot of people are attracted to CBL because they get to eat all the "bad" stuff. I know it's about simple carbs, so donuts, fries, cakes, burgers are all listed. One thing I don't understand though… all of these are loaded with fats as well. Aren't we supposed to keep fats low after working out? I understand the carb part, the fats confuse me.Thank you!

Trevor G FullbrightModeratorThe first thing PWO it's better to keep fat lower to get a bigger insulin response, something like Protein, dextrose, and leucine.After that it's less of a big deal, the fats wont be avalible for storage until after you finish eating carbs and wont be stored as fat.Keifer has stated most people do better when they just eat and don't worry to much about that fat content.I just have leucine 3 times during the evening to keep insulin levels high and make sure the glucose is cleared before bed.

Cmf10024MemberI'm also a lacto ovo vegetarian and hoping to be able to do CBL. Just finished reading the book and keifer gives examples of eating cottage cheese during the ULC part of the day, so based on the book it appears that it is ok.Has he changed this view since the book came out?

Trevor G FullbrightModeratorTo be honest I haven't heard Keifer say much about this lately, but it's known that dairy proteins are more insulinotropic and since avoiding insulin spikes in the first half of the day is needed for best results.And you don't need any supplements. The ones that work best are Whey, Leucine, dextrose, Fish oil, a creatine.You can use more if you want, or not use any of them.But those are the best ones to get started and get best results.

PeteMemberThe 1:1 protein to fat ratio.Is that the daily balance that should be reached? Meaning that it would be ok to have some meals higher in protein and some meals higher in fat as long as it adds up to 1:1 at the end of the day.Or does every individual meal have to be that way?

JttParticipantI think you are digging a lil too deep in the details. I would first follow the basic guidelines, try a daily 1:1 ratio, and see how your body reacts for 2-3 weeks. Then adjust as necessary.In one of the podcasts, Keifer mentioned that CBL'ers who are more successfully don't delve as much into the nittt gritty and instead just focus on experimentation / overall concept.

+1 to this, people seem to like complicating a supposedly stupid simple program.Think of it like this, early part of day/- no carbs eat more fat than you would normallyAfternoon:- train heavy and hardAfter training:- focus on hi gi carbs Dial back or eat more dependent on results!

This is the comment I was referring to when I said that I fail to understand how a vegetarian diet could possibly make it hard to get enough carbs. If anything, it's the opposite. A lot of vegetarians eat too much carbs and not enough protein.As far as your vegan experiment, Trevor.. it might be that your body was going through a radical change. Or possibly you were not doing it right? I mean even here, with CBL.. the initial phase is hard on some people. Whenever there is a major change in diet, the body has to adjust.You are right.. there are so many definitions, I don't follow them either. I think technically lacto-ovo means that you choose to eat eggs and dairy. My own guideline is.. if it has a mother and/or eyeballs, I'm staying away from it 😉
CBL can work with a lacto-ovo-vegetarian, it is just not optimal. However, it will give you better results than other diets. I had my years long phases of diets including all sorts of raw/vegetarian, etc. etc. so no judgements here. All I ask you to consider is to monitor your body constantly and relentlessly (it's the only one you have) for health and longevity reasons. Be as open-minded to other possibilities as you ask others to be open to yours.
