janet phiferParticipantHere's an interesting self-experiment on calorie counting. The guy first does a 21-day low-carb-high fat diet of 5,794 calories per day http://live.smashthefat.com/5000-calorie-challenge-day-20/ (Grand Total; 5,794 Calories, Carbohydrate=85.2g (10%), Fat=461.42g (53%), Protein=322.2g (37%)).He is now in a 21-day high carb diet experiment at 5,793 calories per day http://live.smashthefat.com/the-21-day-5000-calorie-carb-challenge/ ("eating 64% carbs, 22% fat and 14% protein of what I consider fake foods")Results are quite interesting, especially if you think a calorie is a calorie.

Thanks for posting that..I love seeing n=1 experiments, they're always interesting. And it's similar to what this guy is apparently doing:http://getleanrx.com/the-high-fat-low-carb-to-high-carb-low-fat-isocaloric-challenge-part-1/

Agreed. Only problem is with such a long experiment, it'll be hard to remember to keep track of it as an observer

he has a twitter or facebook so i just started following him.. he is already a month into it so far he said not much has changed he is upping the carbs a bit.. he said he has been doing high fat for seven years.. i doubt high carbs(and looks like he is doing pretty clean) even for a year would have much adverse effects on him.. stuff like chronic insulin resistance and much of the other harmful effects of high carb diets take a long time to manifest usually.. dude is pretty jacked though from his low carb lifestyle prior to this experiment. Think it would be more intersting if he went to a standard american diet of low fat and highly processed foods.. but as a Dr and in good shape I doubt he would want to do that heh

I personally think this is a really bad idea. He is sure to see bad results on the carbs this way. I dont know why anyone would think this experiment is worth trying. Especially in the order and time frame he's planning.

21 days is very short.. don't think it will make a huge difference either way as he doesn't appear to be a very trained athlete or anything but his eating in the carb challenge is pretty typical for decent portion of the population.. but anytime someone wants to do any sort of experiment like this i'm always interested to see what happens
