There doesn't seem to be much love for the post-workout carb-loading donut or turnover on the forums. But this was,and I guess still is one of the selling points for Keifer's CBL.You know,Carb Backloading was supposed to be for simple minded donut loving schmucks like me.It now seems that recommended carb choices are a bit elitist and "clean".So,is the donut dead?Has Keifer addressed that there are carbs that are superior? Is it because of questionable substances that come along with the typical donut? Is CBL 2.0 going to have a mouth watering bowl of white rice on the cover?

mostly by people on the forums i haven't seen kiefer change his stance on those foods.. he still favors the cherry turnovers as per his latest video thing.. i'd think you are much better off doing the homemade turnover over the store bought stuff.. for the program itself it probably won't make a difference at all though.. but imho it's best to look for the healthier way of things as it doesn't matter much if you have a great body you worked so hard for, for 10 years then drop dead from health problems related to crappy nutrition..

I get the feeling that the novelty of eating donuts and cake has worn off for a lot of people following CBL.

Kiefer spoke at PaleoFX and now everyone's gun shy about gluten and seed oils. :pSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

People keep misunderstanding Kiefer on this.  Kiefer does not recommend backloading with donuts.  Yes, he does talk about it a lot, and you can cherry pick quotes from him to make it seem like he suggest that.  However, you have to listen to everything he says and use common sense along with it.Basically what Kiefer means when talks about backloading with junk is:  1. It can serve a purpose, especially for people that can handle carbs well and want to put on size; and 2.  IT's ok to consume it in moderation.I personally do eat quite a bit of junk.  This past week I consumed chocolate candies in one backload and half a bag of M&Ms in another backload.  The recommendation for CBL has always been to use desserts as a supplement in the backload, not the staple carb source.

think the main problem is the book doesn't offer a whole lot of ideas for food choices.. also of course the program is advertised basically "eat pizza/donuts" and get jacked

Kiefer's article “Paleo: Pig with Lipstick” is actually the first piece of his that I ever read, and I've followed his stance on Paleo ever since.I was being glib when I wrote that comment, but I do think that Kiefer has become more closely tied to the paleo community since speaking at Paleo FX and being on Robb Wolf's show multiple times. The "eat junk and get jacked" advertising makes for fun marketing, but the truth is that CBL appeals to a high-performance crowd who would do clean backloads 80% of the time anyway just to get that extra .5% out of their results. Smart athletes are going to take an interest in that sort of thing anyway, (LA Lakers, anyone?), and Kiefer's material definitely appeals to people who are smarter than the average bear, so it seems only natural to me that the "work hard to eat donuts, eat donuts to work hard" mindset didn't last forever.

True, I suppose the book could be re-written to fix this problem.  However, I noticed that the people that think you should backload with garbage either didn't take the time to read and understand or they are looking for a way to make CBL not work for them so they can prove Kiefer wrong.Another issue I see is a semantics issue.  Before CBL, I came from the old school bodybuilding diet.  Carbs were brown rice, oatmeal, and whole grain bread.  White bread, white potatoes, and white rice WAS considered junk.  Anything high glycemic was.  I think Kiefer wrote CBL with these people in mind.

Reading this forum, I seem to see most people recommending rice and potatoes as “clean” foods for carb loading, yet even in the videos Keifer emailed out this last week, he said people who try to back load cleanly (he mentioned potatoes and brown rice, obviously brown is worse for backloading than white rice) often see worse results than people who stick to dirtier carbs. So I've been a little confused about it myself. My wife loves to bake, so there's no shortage of home made baked goods around here. My first time back loading worked well, I got leaner and stronger, though my back loads were fairly small and I was out of the country and didn't have my wife around to bake for me. After some moving around and vacationing and things I was fatter again so my wife and I did CNS for a few weeks. I was lean enough to want to go back to back loading, but with so much baked goodness available, even only back loading from about 7pm-11pm, I seemed to be getting fatter. We relaxed a little for the holidays and are on CNS again. Next month I'll go back to back loading. This time I want to try to back load as clean as possible 6 nights a week and enjoy the good stuff on my wife's carb nights. I'm hoping that way I'll get good results while still enjoying plenty of junk once a week, and that my daily back loads will be bland enough my wife won't be tempted to join in lol. I'll just have to wait and see what the results are with back loads that are lower in fat and sugar compared to what's happened in the past, and how much I can get away with eating if it's cleaner. I do think my results were good with dirty carbs as long as the back loads weren't too big.

Probably a quantity thing. If you trying to gain and eating rice & potatoes for your backloads, you'll feel fuller and might not eat enough carbs to grow. With the junkier foods, you can eat 4-500g of carbs without batting an eyelid. More than enough for most people to put on size and see results.

Okay he means the processed store bought shelved crap you can get. Bakery/baked goods out weigh and do a better justice than those.

I don't ever recall Kiefer saying not to backload with potatoes, as he has recommended them several times.  Again there is a semantics issue.  White rice and potatoes are NOT traditionally considered clean carbs.  They were considered junk.

i think it comes down to how much you're training and how hard, i train 5 days a week and backload with 450-500g of carbs but i do a lot of volume.  I backload with one family size box of fruity/cocoa pebbles with almond milk, and 2 or 4 pop tarts, and for protein i have one pound of ground beef with prego sauce for flavor simple as that plus my post workout shake and my pork rines to break my fast.  And right now im doing DB so off days ill have like 200-250g of carbs which usually is one frozen pizza.  i'm slowly gaining weight right now im 192 and this is the best ive looked at that weight.  tomorrow im gonna go get a dexa scan to see what my body fat is

I can't remember if I've ever seen or heard him recommend potatoes, but it's good to know he has, thanks.
