Matthew C GrahamParticipantI've been wanting to have Italian sausage for my low-carb part of the day but all the packages have ingredients of sugar or dextrose. There are no carbs in the nutrition facts but I didn't want to take the risk. Any thoughts?

Gl;itch.eMemberA lot of these kinda things will list those in the ingrediants. They key is the amount of them? If you can keep the entire meal under 5-10grams of carbs it shouldnt matter.

TomahawkMemberI see them listed at 2 to 3 grams of carbs per bratwurst(similar food).

Jimmy TParticipantSugar associated with the pre-made seasoning mix used is my guess – though not sure why some herbs, garlic and hot peps would need dextrose or any other sweetener. Clearly the mark of processed food but it can't be a material amount.Buy from a butcher or a grocery store that makes them in house... at least you can ask them what they're putting in. Plus you'll get a better idea of what the real fat percentage is.

Richard SchmittModeratorI would use those on a CN or a backload personally. Even with minor amounts of “sugar”, I would jeopardize any type of progress because of those products when you can change up the timing. OR what you can do is eat them later in the evenings, even if it's an ULC day. Since insulin sensitivity is low in the evenings, and I would assume it should not hurt that much. Still skeptical.

CaseyDMemberJust eat it. The actual amoutnt of sugar is so minute. If you notice you're stalling at some point, take it out.

tzanghiParticipantI eat sausage all the time, and I have made progress. Just don't get the packaged sausages, get fresh ones from a butcher or meat market or something. I can tell you for sure that no respectable Italian sausage vendor is putting sugar or dextrose into their product. Bangers and breakfast sausage, yea there's some sugar, but NOT Italian sausage.

CaseyDMemberI'm going to add to my response… If you have to ask about something like this, it's probably best ot avoid it for now. So I'll combine Big Tex's response with tzanghi's and take credit for it as my own 🙂Probably best to avoid it, but if you can find something you know is definitely fresh, such as from a butcher, you should be all set. Just be careful with ANY packaged foods.

McCartyKGuestPretty sure you can make your own it's ground pork with Italian seasoning nothing exceptional you just have to shove it in casings or cook it however you want. Who knows there might be a local butcher willing to make it to your specs for a nominal fee.

Richard SchmittModeratorI did find some GF Bratwurst at HEB today that contains 1g of carbs per serving.

rstlneMemberGood question, I had the same issue yesterday buying meat yesterday. I bought 4 16oz/1lb packs at $1.99/lb. The ground pork right beside it was $2.99/lb so I said f*ck it, I'm buying the cheaper stuff. It was the Johnsonville brand and it did say 1g carb per serving. 6 servings so 6g of carbs for the package won't be that bad. Test and tune and see what the results are.
