lillywhitesMemberIn one of John's video's…I believe he was speaking to a group of Female Trainers, he mentioned something about either Dietitian's or Nutritionist's being licensed, and having to give out certain information, even they knew this to be false. Does anyone know if it was the D's, or the N's. My only thinking is that they have to push the USDA Food Pyramid that makes you fat, even if they know it is crap, due to them being licensed….thanks.

I think it's dieticians that are licensed. I don't think "Nutritionist" is a legally recognized profession, sort of like a psychologist.

CBachelor17MemberBoth have to (professionally) follow the Dietary Guidelines set by the government from what I understand. I thought they were physical trainers of some sort, which can/do give dietary suggestions that don't have to follow those guidelines.

lillywhitesMemberthanks guys…appreciate the knowledge sharing. I've been in random “discussions” with a co-worker, who keeps defending her failed plans saying that her fried is a Dietician, so she must know….meanwhile she stays at 260lbs..Type II..etc..etc..

from what I have heard/read being a licensed nutritionist you are legally required to go by certain guidelines when giving recommendations on certain things.. i have read stories about several online nutrition coaches that opted out of getting a degree in that field for this reason. Not sure how much truth is in this but just what I have heard.

Its 100% the truth. The only dietary suggestions they are legally able to give must follow the governments given guidelines. Ive seen one in the past and she couldn't give me any advise beyond going at least 120g carbs per day and was pretty firm on going against keto and low carb.

lillywhitesMemberThis is EXACTLY what I was referring to…you have people preaching that instead of seeing a Dr. because they have very little nutritional training (which is true), they now see a Dietitian, as they really know what they are talking about. Which is not true, if they are legally obligated to follow government guidelines.

Yea I remember being in college and my roommate was taking a nutrition class. He told me that they said in the class you need at least 120 g of carbs everyday or else you'll die.

samuel r walkerParticipantSo I asked a few of my professors who are RDs and such who informed me that while you are required to inform clients that your recommendations do not coincide with the government dietary guidelines, there is no legal obligation to follow them.. One even became my favorite after she expressed he love for ketogenic dieting. haha
