Was wondering if anyone knew if taking L-Theanine and GABA before bed would have any negative interactions with each other.  Been trying to research their interaction online but haven't found much.  I now that L-Theanine works by increasing the amount of GABA in your body but I don't know if for whatever reason taking GABA would hurt the effects of taking L-Theanine or vice versa.  Thanks to anyone who has any insight into this.

I understand that l-Theanine increases the body's production of serotonin and dopamine, but not GABA specificially.  Since GABA needs serotonin (a neuromodulator) to function properly, it seems that it would benefit to take them together.  Perhaps 5-HTP (an actual upstream of serotonin) may work well in conjunction also, perhaps instead of the l-Theanine which is quite pricey.

It increases dopamine and GABA levels and studies are controversial on whether it increases or decreases serotonin levels.  I'm just interested to know if taking GABA and L-Theanine would be counter-intuitive.  I'll try it tonight but was just curious if anyone had the scientific answer.

Well, that was my attempt from the scientific literature I have been privy to while researching my sleep and anxiety issues, sorry if it was not up to snuff.  This is what i was referencing: Yokogoshi H, Kobayashi M, Mochizuki M, Terashima T. Effect of theanine, rglutamylethylamide, on brain monoamines and striatal dopamine release in conscious rats. Neurochem Res 1998;23:667-673.  Now, it is metabolized into glutamic acid which then can be taken down pathways to actual GABA, so perhaps you are on to something... Unno T, Suzuki Y, Kakuda T, et al. Metabolism of theanine, a gamma-glutamylethylamide, in rats. J Agric Food Chem 1999;47:1593-1596.At any rate, it looks like any way you look at it, you are covering all your bases by introducing exogenous GABA as well as letting yor body do its magic by at best giving it the building blocks to manufacture it or at worst faciliting whatever GABA is present, be it endo- or exogenous.Good luck with the experiment and let us know how it goes!

For what it's worth, try an allergy elimination diet, I had blood clotting issues, skin issues, anxiety, depression, OCD…the list goes on, when I eliminated gluten and reduced pasteurized cow dairy, all these issues disappeared within a month.  I reintroduced it and immediately got a sinus infection and same old anxiety issues.  Also as far as L-Theanine goes, Anji White Tea has a significant amount in it and I can focus like none other when I drink it, I have a cool tea shop near me that sells it but I'm sure you can find it online, good luck!
